Well this thread is pretty ancient but I'm gonna throw out a quick recommendation of Salvation Prophecy. It's basically Mount & Blade in space (though a little less in depth and a lot more basic) and it's a pretty great game, if you don't mind some repetition. It's a really stable and bug free game too, which is surprising considering its scope and the fact that it was mostly made by one person. There is a demo you can try if you're curious.

Just out of curiousity I tried to play it without the Steam client and it works! Ironic because with the extension Steam Enhanced it says it has DRM even excluding Steam but I'm not sure if that's a bug. The normal Steam site says "Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: DRM Free!" That's funny.

I should mention though because I know you have not the latest computer: it's rather demanding and even if my computer runs it well, there's something about the engine that really doesn't want to run optimally, not as good as Space Rangers 2 Reboot at least. Recommended specs are a dual core CPU 2.4GHz and Nvidia 8600GT / Radeon X3550.

Yeah my pc is on it's last legs but I'm do to get a new one in the next few months. I may just hold off for now and work on some of this endless backlog.
