Nroug7: Darkstar one is fun but a bit outdated.
I looked at that (on here I think) a while ago - I seem to remember some poor reviews due to the upgrade system or something - is there enough of a game beyond that to keep up interest then?

Also - just seen this

anyone played it?

Sachys: Startopia actually sounds like its worth a look - thanks!
Actually, Space Colony look worth it too, but I while I can vouch for Startopia for having played it a lot, Space Colony is only on my wishlist for now. You might want to check it too, though...

It depends, If you take it for what it is (An Arcade Space fighter with small sim elements and RPG elements) then it is kind of fun. Would have to get more opinions then mine though, I'm slightly biased since it's what got me in to the genre.

lowyhong: Tried Drox Operative?

amok: I completely forgot about that one - have you tried it yet?
I probably will, but not anytime soon. Got my plate full with Eador, Resonance, Primordia and writing :p
You can apparently play SOTS 2 now-the bugs have been fixed. The initial release was horribly buggy though.

One for the backburner then - right now I'm looking for something less "arcade" or sim/rpg-like - but if it gets any cheaper i might just pick it up. Thanks for the info Nroug!

Drox Operative is straight up compelling.

Different factions fight, killing a faction's people in front of a different faction raises your standing with the latter faction, the game is open-ended and winning is based on how much of the universe you conquer or how well you do economically, and most of all, it's an RPG that you can actually lose! Yes. You can lose at Drox Operative. And it adds to the game a lot.

Oh, and I've heard good things about Spaceteam and am going to try it sometime later today, so if you have an iOS device, it might be worth a look.

EDIT: Also, Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space and Strange Adventures In Infinite Space are good.

Edge of Space is looking like it will be a really good sandbox game in space, as well.

Drox operative sounds likea goodun then!
And of course, if you tolerate adventure games, there is Space Quest. The first three Space Quests are my favorite sierra-on-line adventure games...

Heheh!
Yes, I'm familiar with them, but couldn't get into them for some reason (though I do like adventure games too).

As in this Space Colony? I own it and it is very Sims-like in the levels I have played. Any combat seems to be more of the defend the base variety. It reminds me of Stronghold from the same the develepor in some areas.

The trailer made me expect a "7 days a skeptic" remake...
