Hiya =)

As the title implies, I'm looking for a game matching - as much as possible - the gameplay of Fallout Tactics. If possible, I'd like that game to be more 2D than 3D engined ^^ I'm really looking for a game that doesn't spread too far from its main gameplay - the X-com games may be a possibility (in that case, which ones are the best ones of the series ?)

Of course, sometimes a game has a likely flavor, but it's difference offers a major twist to the gameplay : don't hesitate to offer as many suggestions as you feel fit =D I already own Jagged Alliance 2, for instance (I liked it, but had some trouble getting hooked though...)

Thanks a lot

While I haven't played Fallout Tactics (yet), isn't JA2 what you are looking for? Squad based tactical combat, with a larger strategic layer over it.
Also, you can try XCOM:EU (can't reccomended enough).
JA 2 is arguably still the best squad based tactic shooter.

The new X-COM is also excellent. The best of the older X-COM is,imo, Apocalypse, as it is the most complex of the bunch.

Silent Storm is also very good, but I dislike the setting and the later gameplay elements.

It all depends on how important the strategic layer is for you.

Speaking of JA2, the latest addition to 1.13 from our german coder is massive assaults in all cities, which should be painful ;)
Think of it as a Drassen Counter Attack without the benefit of the (in)famous Drassen Bathroom to defend from.

I think, as I grow older, that I don't have as many time and patience to fully embrace a game as before ^^' If the game offers "too much", I often fear I won't use all that the game has to offer, and I sometimes just feel "simplistic". That's why Fallout Tactics worked so well with me : a loose storyline to tie the missions together, a wide array of possibitilies, but not too deep.

I realise I'm very nitpicking here, but having fun, simple and straightforward fun, has been quite hard to find in the game genres I like ^^'

I'll give X-com Apocalypse a try =)
Incubation, from the battle isle series, was a pretty interesting squad leading game, although much more combat oriented. I would also recommend you, despite de obvious differences, to try Warhammer 40k: Dawn of war 2. If you haven't tried, you might be surprised. Even further away, there's Gorky 17 which is a pretty decent in squad tactics once you get past all the weird mechanics and the not so useful RPG aspect. Finally, UFO: Afterlight; which might not be an X-COM and switches RPG for strategy, but it's pretty nice (until it starts repeating itself).

I'm a big fan of fallout tactics, and squad leading games in general, so I'm just throwing in some games I enjoyed. Looking forward to other replies.

P1na: UFO: Afterlight
That's what I'm here to recommend if you like the real-time portion of F: T. Well, not exatly that - I found the entire series brilliant, UFO: Aftermath for atmosphere and general approach to storytelling, UFO: Aftershock's IMO got the best gameplay of the bunch, and UFO: Afterlight is quite slylized and fun as well.

Dawn of War 2, that's something I wouldn't have thought about... I'll look for a demo. And I'll skim through the many UFO's ^^
Theres also Abomination.

Available on GG. Not played it for years so best to read some reviews first !

I suggest Jagged Alliance (the first one), or Jagged Alliance - Deadly Games. I prefer these to Jagged Alliance 2 - for the same reason you said, I like JA2, but I don't get hooked. Some gameplay elements and controls can be slightly clunky in JA1, there are some improvements in JA:DG, but still there is a certain charm to them that is missing from JA2 for me. Maybe you will feel the same way.

Vorax: I like JA2, but I don't get hooked.
Come to the dark side. We have zombies, food system, dirt and internal failure system, WH40K powers, Massive CounterAttacks, Covert Operations and Disguises, and probably a ton of other features I'm currently forgetting.

I want to second this recommendation.
X-COM 1&2 (Enemy Unknown & Terror from the Deep) and JA2 would be my suggestions.

And Silent Storm, though it always seemd a bit unoptimized to me.

Yeah, Dawn of War 2's utterly brilliant. It's basically an action-RPG, squad-based tactical real-time 'strategy'. You get experience, collect loot, and think about optimal positioning and use of your squads in any given time. Crazy combination, and it works great - the aRPG + loot aspect lets you customize your troops in many different ways to fit many different roles. Also, demo's not really representative of the whole, which is a shame.
