If you're prepared to get an emulator for your PC, then you open yourself up to such wonders as:
Vandal Hearts
Vandal Hearts 2
Disgaea (ad infinitum)
La Pucelle Tactics
Makai Kingdom
Hoshigami
Final Fantasy Tactics
Kartia - the Word of Fate (good luck finding that one, though)
.... and, well, many other PS1 and PS2 calssic Tactical RPGs.

Of these, for me, Vandal Hearts will always be king. Each battle is like a glorious tabletop game where you care for each of your pieces (except maybe Darius), and the twist at the end for snatching victory from the jaws of defeat is still, to this day, priceless.

PC-native, though? Hm. Not sure there's much that hasn't been mentioned already. If you can suspend the 'fantasy' part a little, you could always give Battle Isles: Infestation a go.

Ah yes, Spellcross, I've not actually finished that one. it was interesting, though a bit rough around the edges. I would not recommend spending too much time tracking it down, but if you find it for a few €, it might be worth it.

Elmofongo: ......Fire Emblam Radiant Dawn.
Listed Fire Emblem in my original post :P

Stooner: Did you tried Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes, AFnord?
avatar
AFnord: I was under the impression that that is basically a puzzle game with Might & Magic characters. Am I wrong?
Kind of puzzle-tactics battles.. played years ago, and remember having fun... ;p

Also, you mentioned Wii... Tactics Ogre wasn't released for the Virtual Console?
You can never go wrong with Tactics Ogre...

What about ? [url=http://www.battlesofnorghan.com/]Battles of Norghan is also a very good game.

There's this indie game called Arenum that looks good. It's free, but it's not out yet. They also had an IndieGoGo campaign going for a while, but it didn't work out for them, sadly.

Gladius

psx Tactic ogre and ogre battle + FF Tactics ofc

Poxnora (steam)

Some content are free. Game is cool, but free content ends very fast and game is to expensive(for me).

Im back now to poxnora and they add some free content for single play).

That does sound really promising. You've sold me on it!

I would prefer to avoid emulation, unless I can get a legal copy of the game in question. And I doubt my computer will be able to handle a PS2 emulator to begin with. It is ancient.
I do have all Battle Isle games, apart from The Androsia War though
And the more recent Galactic Assault: Prisoner of Power, which is in the same vein (though not by the same people, or part of the BE series)

I don't think it ever was. Ogre Battle & its N64 sequel were, but not Tactics Ogre.

Never even heard of Styrateg before, but it has a demo, so I'll check it out.

Oh, and Asmo2, I guess I owe you a game as well! When Trilarion has picked one, you'll get to pick one of the others from the list.

And I guess I have enough games to keep me occupied for a while now. Thanks everyone!

*edit* Oh, and thanks for not mentioning Grotesque Tactics :P

Um, the emulators just provide the shell program to run the games - you'd still need to have a legal copy of the game to actually play :) I use epsxe to run my colelction of old PS1 games and it's very good. PCSX2 is the PS2 emulator I use - again, very good, some compatibility issues with some games but it'll play my copy of Disgaea 2 perfectly well. Getting the bios files out of your existing console for them is a bit of a pain, though.

I thought Ogre Battle was quite interesting, though it got repetitive after a while.

And Grotesque Tactics is not a horrendous game, but nor is it anything special. It is quite simplistic, and does not have a great deal of tactical depth. Its humor also falls flat more often than not and it is poorly optimized.

I know what emulators do :P I was just trying to say that I won't pirate games. Most people seem to directly associate emulating console games with piracy though (which I guess is the most common use for console emulators).
There is at least one PS1 emulator that does not require a BIOS file, and I've used it in the past to play games that I've borrowed. I would never had had the chance to play the glorious Castlevania Symphony of the Night if a friend had not imported it. Same with Xenogears (same friend, he is a bit of a collector).

Don't know if i should try it...

And i found one list of games here, various platforms, but don't know if it will help you...

Good game, but i think that the special effects are too exaggerated ...

It's an anime thing. I can understand it putting people off, but the gameplay is fantastic, especially as you can throw other team members to different spaces, or even stack them like a totem pole. Exploding prinnies, and a level limit that is sky high (more than 9999!)

I don't have a PS2 (and my computer is sadly not good enough to run PS2 emulators, I checked the recommended min computer specs)

If you have it, it might be worth a try, but I don't think it is worth anyone's time.

I've found that blog before, but the owner mainly reviews console games and the list contains a mix of strategy & tactics games, which makes it hard to find the tactical games.
PS2s are pretty much dirt cheap. You could probably get a slim for like $50 used. You open up a much wider gaming possibility than limiting to the PC.
