Hey guys I was curious of the community could give me a hand. I'm near completing Blade of Darkness, on the Lord of Darkness right now, and I absolutely loved this game, looking forward to playing through it with the other characters at some point. However, one issue that I did have was that it just didn't have enough secret areas/items.

[edit : in an attempt to word myself a bit more clearly (I'm poor at this) I'll list off a few qualities I'm looking for]

- Third person controlled
- preferably fantasy/medieval setting
- environments that require you to be cautious (traps, pit falls and the like)
- secret areas to discover (not necessarily open world, but a lot of extras to uncover, think Duke 3D secrets)


Hopefully I made it a bit more clear, apologies for being so poor at this.

Are you sure you're not looking for RPGs ? Gothic, Elder Scrolls...?

Yeah I should have brought those in too shouldn't I? >< I mean I don't think Blade of Darkness is an RPG, the Gothic series however does seem to have somewhat of what I'm after though I'm not sure how hidden things are,

also looking back I realize how terribly worded my explanation is, I left out another aspect of games that I enjoy like Blade of Darkness, and Dark Souls, and even Skyrim if I recall correctly though I havent played much of it is the traps you need to avoid. really should've planned my wording better. ><

Get Gothic 1, play for a few hours, if you like it, buy the second one too.

As said Gothic is great, the control system takes a while, a long while, to get used to but once you do it works REALLY REALLY well. Love that game. Enclave is great too; little more thought inducing than Gothic with a really interesting magic system (you have to actually do the incantations with the mouse).

Drakan but I guess you can only get it via ebay amazon and such. It's a game from 1999 so secrets were not fashionable yet and therefore you won't get any massages that you've achieved something special but I can assure you that even though the story is pretty linear you will have pretty big territory to explore. Take a look at this (it's one of the many levels). As you can see there are some locations that are marked on your map along with the quests that you need to do but they are pretty much linear. You can only choose in which order you do them, but that's all. But hey, you don't have to do them immediately, do you? There is a vast open territory to explore! Please note that only the biggest islands are marked there! There are a lot of smaller ones. You ride a dragon in this game and therefore you can fly wherever you want, you can land wherever you want (ok, not wherever - a dragon needs some decent "parking place", doesn't it?) and enter every cave, every ravine. And even if you come out of the cave from the other side you don't have to come back - just call your dragon and he will pick you up. Marvelous! In those secret locations you can find nice weapons, armors, bows, arrows (exploding arrows are perhaps my favorite) and potions. Some of them unique, some of them just very good, some of them... well... pieces of crap, but who cares ;)

I remember a game called Drakan, but it was on the PS2, never got the chance to check it out or if it was just a port of the PC version, but it certainly looked interesting! especially the dragon, and plenty of areas, it seems just like what I'm looking for so I will definitely be looking in to it on PC or my PS2, or both if it turns out to be a sequel. thanks for the recommendation!

I updated my original post in an attempt to word myself a bit better. I appreciate all the recommendations, so far it does seem that Gothic would be the sort of series I'm looking for after all. and with the sale going on it'd be the perfect time to give it a shot, also very glad to hear that Enclave is a good game as well :)

I really appreciate all the suggestions and patience with my wording! any other recommendations are welcome!

Drakan: Order of the Flame (1999) was PC exclusive (correct me if I'm wrong)
Drakan: The Ancients' Gates (2002) was PS2 exclusive (I'm pretty sure I'm not wrong here)
And that cheeses me off because I've never had PS2 so I've never played The Ancients' Gates. Obviously, everything I said applies to Order of the Flame

it does in fact look like that's the case, which means I can add another game on to this list! :) unforunate you never owned a PS2 though :( In my opinion it was one of the greatest consoles ever made. built to last too! I went through 2 Xbox 360's and a PS3 and my PS2 is still kicking.

Probably not exactly what you're looking for, but take a look at Sacrifice while you're here. It's one of the greatest games ever made, but one of the least-known too, unfortunately. And it's only on sale for 5 more days...

Thanks for the suggestion! I do already own Sacrifice though, believe it or not I played that game when it was fairly new back when I was a youngin' on my neighbors PC. a little too complicated for me back then so I cheated a lot but I agree it's criminally under rated and I tell everyone I can about it when under rated games come up in conversation.

You are describing Rune, mate. The problem is that it's not on GOG's list. Wonderful hack n slash with RPG features. The non so old Vicking was some kind similar to Rune, but no so good though.

Rune, if I recall another one that was also released on the PS2. or some incarnation of it, no doubt the PC version would be superior though. Maybe by the time I finish the Gothic games, and Enclave, it will be on GOG, if not then it Rune Gold doesn't seem to run too high on Ebay.

I've seen Viking on sale from Steam several times too, if it goes on again I may pick it up but I have heard it was rather average.
