Hey guys!

Another little problem with Baldur's Gate I'm having. It works completely fine, but the loading and saving times are much longer than normal, and it's starting to annoy me. I haven't played it in a while, however, and I suspect that might be some sort of explanation.

But is there any other reason as to why it's taking so long to load and save? And how do I fix the problem? Same problem is with Baldur's Gate 2 as well. I don't know about Icewind Dale though. It also takes long to quit out of the loaded game as well.

Is there any way to fix this problem? I have no mods for Baldur's Gate 1 (not counting the console), and 1 or 2 I think for Baldur's Gate 2.

Please help!

Edit: Idk how this got put in the General Discussion area.. I was sure I was in the Baldur's Gate series area when I clicked on "Add topic"..

Update: Icewind Dale loading times are normal, but I assume that's because I have a disc for it.

Hmm, I don't have anything game-specific, but I'm pretty sure that if your GPU temperature is getting too high for some reason it can start making things lag. Certain games do seem to increase the temperature quite a bit, at least on my pc, but I guess that depends on your card, fans, etc.
It could be high fragmentation on the HDD or a HDD that's going bad. I'd definitely recommend testing the disk to make sure that it isn't dieing. My current HDD is in the process of dieing and it's definitely showing up in the length of time that it takes to do anything that involves that disk.
If you haven't the same problems with other games/programs it has something to do with both games.
Have you tried to locate the two save game folders?

copy them to safety, install the two programs again and see if the situation improves.

Oh and before copying them check the size of the save game files.

I had some games where the save game files increased drastically in size and it really made the whole saving and loading process a lot slower. Some Civ and Supreme Commander games being one of those

FYI, he reposted this in the BG forum.

By "longer than normal" do you mean longer than other BG installs you've had, or just longer than you expected due to the age of the game? Because the Baldur's Gates have had extremely long load times since the very beginning. Even on my modern (very fast) system it still takes at least 5 seconds to load a BG2/Tutu save... and towards the end of TOB it can take up to 10 seconds as the files get bigger. The quicksaves are the only ones that seem to load any faster.
Normal load abd save times times are at least around 5 seconds for me.. Idk how you describe that as slow. The loading and save times I'm talking about are around 10-15 seconds.

Anyway, I think I might have to do a reinstall either way now, because I downloaded a patch for the current version I have now to see if it would fix it, but I think that fucked it up because now it's saying "Insert disc 6", when it never required a disc at all.

Well when virtually every other game you own loads things either instantly or loads too fast to read the loading screen hints, then 8-10 seconds feels like forever. :) Even 3d games that are only a couple of years old will load faster than BG does.

As for patches, all the games on GOG are completely up to date (with a few rare exceptions) so there's no reason to install more official patches. Things like widescreen mods and bugfix packages should be fine, though.

How big are the saves supposed to be on average?

Anyway, I re-downloaded Baldur's Gate, and it works now. No insert disc 6 or anything. However the loading and saving times are still slow. I haven't restarted my PC yet though, so I'll do that now and keep you posted if the situation improves.

I don't know the exact size, but depending on the power of your PC I would look for savegames with over 50 MB of size. But that varies a lot depending on your hard disk speed, and other hardware issues.
It could be that the two games' savegames are located on another harddisk which is slower or almost full or something.
