Hello,

I am looking for great books to read. I am not the most avid reader, so probably anything you list, I haven't read before. I have pretty much only read obvious things like Stephen King, Dean Koontz and H.P. Lovecraft.

What I am most interested in reading is something with a great atmosphere and universe in the book or series. Something modern, with Sci-Fi elements. I am not the biggest fan of high fantasy, so it will probably put me off a little bit. I like the Cronenberg style of horror where the hero or antihero makes significant changes to his/herself over the course of the story.

I want to read anything to do with the occult, aliens, esoteric horrors, religion or mythology. I have recently been on a Shin Megami Tensei bender so if there were any books that have a similar feel, where the author combines technology spirituality and horror into a cohesive mass, it would be amazing. I am also playing through Bloodrayne 1 and 2. So any books that have a similar vibe to the B.P.R.D and Hellboy comics would be fantastic.

I know this kind of specific, but you guys have the most refined taste of the entire internet. (Or at least similar to mine)

Thanks!

I will specify a bit more I guess.

I really like the Midnight Meat Train by Clive Barker because it is a very dark and gritty story about what might happen when trains stop for the night and to disappeared persons. I don't care for the Dune series as much because in my mind, it is much of the story is preposterous and requires serious suspension of disbelief. I am a huge fan of films and books by Guillermo Del Toro and Clive Barker because they craft believable worlds and mythologies around the events in their respective works. Please take my comment on Dune with understanding. I love Dune, but there are aspects of it that I don't care for.

I hope this helps a little bit.

I have been checking out this recommendations and they look very interesting.

The White Plague looks awesome. I really like the idea of multiple personalities. Fight Club is one of my favorite movies.
Peter Hamilton, the Commonwealth saga.
The Commonwealth Saga looks very promising.

I am glad I asked you guys. I have checked other sources, but they generally offer more straightforward sci-fi or horror. these novels are right up my alley.
The Face of Another

The Secret Rendezvous

Both by Kobo Abe.
The Ender's Game series is a must read. Orson Scott Card.
The commonwealth saga seemed to fit your expectations, near future with high technical plausability. The social-fiction aspects elements are great too, it is on par with Asimov quality of depiction in my opinion ... sooooo another recommandation : if you missed Asimov's 'caves of steel', you really have a lot of things to read yet, don't worry :)

Sidenote : Asimov work is not 'modern' per se, but I think he could see the future. This beats that.
Huh. I'm an avid reader and a horror fanatic, yet the two rarely seem to cross over for me. However, I'd recommend Wildwood Road by Christopher Golden. It's eerie, and it throws a bit of mythology in there, as well. Hope you like it. :)

I was going to mention the Dune series. :) And I LOVE LOVE LOVE Neil Gaiman. :)

Speaking of, how do you feel about "graphic novels" other than Hellboy? Neil Gaiman is also the author of the "Sandman" series. Some interesting twists on old stories, as well as some good new ones. I didn't really get as much into them, but my better half LOVED "Constantine" "Preacher" and "Lucifer" also. Another good series of graphic novels (although VERY fantasy) is the "Fables" series.

Neil Gaiman also co-authored with my other favorite author (Terry Pratchett) for "Good Omens" - basically a parody of the Omen plotwise, but there's much more there to it than just that. Terry Pratchett is probably best known for the discworld series; very much fantasy but also very much satire and very enjoyable I think.

Margaret Weis (of Dragonlance fame) wrote a Sci Fi set of books; the collection is called "Star of the Guardians", the first book of it is "The Lost King". 4 books total in the main series, then 2 offshoot books that were decent too IIRC.
Neal Stephenson has what you want. Or rather, he has what you don't know that you want.

Check out William Gibson, too.
The "Sandman Slim" books by Richard Kadrey kick butt.

"The Illuminatus! Trilogy" by Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea; "Masks of the Illuminati" and "The Schrodinger's Cat Trilogy" by Robert Anton Wilson.

The "Nightside" books by Simon R. Green.
