Freespace 2. The source code was released over 10 years ago and the community is still active. So there's a lot of mods and other stuff available.

JMich: What do you mean? 1.13 can be played in up to 2560x1600 resolution, though that is done by increasing the view area in the tactical map. As for the strategic map, that requires to create a proper image, so far there are images for 640x480 resolution, 800x600 and 1024x768. Not sure if there is anyone still working on that though, but higher resolutions (including widescreen) should be available in Brot's SCI.

3 resolutions are in 4870 which is the stable version. In the newer SCIs, you should have the following options:

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out. Is there any chance those higher resolutions will ever make it into a stable build?

They will (eventually). "Problem" is that Flugente keeps adding features faster than we can bug check them, so they can't be easily added to a stable build. No idea when Rowa plans for the next stable release, but there is usually a 2-year period between those.

My personal suggestion is to find a version you like and just play that one, until a new "must have" feature gets added.
