marlowe221: Ok, I'm going to set up a couple of builds @ pcpartpicker.com - one with Linux (Ubuntu or Mint), one with Windows 8.1 to help with the pondering process.
Meanwhile, I don't pretend to understand the discussion about GPUs in this thread. Someone give it to me straight up - For Linux, do I want nvidia or AMD? I know drivers are the issue and I know that, at least in the recent past, the proprietary nvidia drivers were just straight up better than the AMD drivers. Is that still true?
I'm not sure if you looking at a desktop or a laptop, and I guess it doesn't really matter. My laptop has an Intel HD4600 / nVidia GTX765M hybrid setup. I'm running Arch 64-bit. The nVidia binary driver installs without an issue, and games run fine on it. I have had zero issues with my laptop, nvidia or otherwise.
I haven't used an AMD/ATi card in several years, so I can't really comment.
