I feel troubled as well for the games that I do have on Desura. This sucks. :(

HypersomniacLive: Forgive my ignorance, but why, how and for whom could Linden Labs aquiring Desura turn out bad?

I know next to nth about Linden Labs - I actually just found out that they created and run Second Life (never cared about it) - so can't really understand what's so worrying about this news.
Hopefully it is not. We will be adding resources to the Desura team but have no intention of changing the service or its open nature.

I understand the concerns given how larger companies have adversely affected distribution platforms, I can assure you we have no disruptive plans at all. Hopefully the extra resources will help players and developers.

Anyways I dont want to be rude and talk too much about Desura on GOG which is also an excellent service.

SCPM: I'm not sure of the significance of this move, but from what (admittedly little) correspondence I've had with Linden Labs' Rod Humble, I don't expect this to be any kind of death knell for Desura.

I take no solace from these assurances. Similar assurances have been given by other companies that bought out smaller companies in the past. As a game collector, this is a black day for me.

I don't know how you can say Desura is a good match for Linden Labs. It's like a Fish Finger manufacturer buying a football team.

graspee: Well take me as an example. I own hundreds of games on Desura. Linden Labs could decide to stop me from being able to download those games more than 3 times without paying or stop me from downloading them at all or not let the game makers upload patched versions any more or they could just flat out turn off the service.

Even if they don't do anything bad now it's quite common for big firms to buy up smaller ones, mess about with them, end up misjudging it and losing customers so mothballing the whole company.

Basically I won't buy another game on desura now. I'll go for steam or gog.
I know and understand all that, but what I'm asking is if they're known to act along these lines as their usual business to warrant such fears.

Well fair enough, the proof is in the pudding I guess. But hell I have dozens of games there. I have no intention of messing up my game collection or yours :)

Wow "dozens". You must be so worried about them. Also aren't you a millionaire or something? Billionaire? And you are worried about a collection of "dozens" of games on Desura? Really?

You're from Linden Labs? Thanks coming to offer some reassurance. Naturally almost all of us here are very fond of GOG, but many of us are also fairly invested in Desura too, and would be sad if a change of ownership caused changes for the worse - I know I'd hate to lose access to my games or if features I like - such as those nice optional installer downloads - stopped being available. Desura is a wonderful service... with a few rough edges. With some more resources it could really be amazing. I hope you treat it well and that it pays off for you in return. I'm feeling optimistic :)

Don't be shy about talking about Desura. The GOG forum isn't too territorial - we often discuss Humble, Desura, Steam and other distributors here. If you have anything to say then I'm sure many of us would be interested to hear

As long as you want to keep supporting the openness and maintaining Desura as an indie platform, then I am fine with it.

Two questions though

1- Are ModDB going to be receiving any changes at all?

2- And, strangely enough, will it have any effect on Indie Royale? (I like Indie Royale)
