And I agree. Splitting up the bundles and giving away keys that you bought as a unit is a violation of the agreement you made when buying the bundle (called terms of service) and is as such not a nice thing to do. We all want DRM free games. So we all should also act accordingly in a way that makes DRM unnecessary. And that means respecting the rules that the seller sets when selling the games. (Like not 'sharing' the games and not splitting the bundles).

You would be surprised how many ToS's you've violated in the course of your life. Why crying over this particular one?

And while I agree this is a violation of their ToS, this is not a reason for GOG to censor their forums. Unless Humble guys start paying GOG for enforcing their ToS.

"The whole DRM-free policy ONLY works on a code-of-honour base."
If we can keep breaking this reliable relation, this one could not continue in DRM free. Maybe HB will take procedures to put some DRM. And here is where GOG enters. Again, is a reliable relation. If GOG feels that not worth anymore putting DRM free games on sale, they could change the whole thing. And personally, I suspect that HB is not pleased with what have been happening, because the Steam keys costs a significant amount to them.

Because DRM-free games are something that is important to me. And in the long run 'DRM-free' only works if the customers play by the rules. The argument for DRM-free is always something like 'stop treating us as if we can't be trusted.' While the argument FOR DRM is 'customers can't be trusted'. ... So if you keep proving that customers can't be trusted after all (because they give a shit about the rules of the purchase) you are playing into the hands of those that want to enforce DRM.

I never requested that they do that. I just suggested that everyone who likes the DRM-free ideal starts to behave accordingly and stops to hand out keys from split bundles. Of course GoG will and should never censor their forum in that respect (that would be a kind of DRM again). But I hope that the majority of the GoG users are mature and responsible enough to see that violating the rules of a company that adheres to the DRM-free idea is just not a nice thing to do. (And in the long run even detrimental to the 'DRM-free' cause)

Nah, HIB is actually making more money thanks to this. While I agree this isn't good for DRM-free idea in general, because it hurts the devs, it doesn't hurt HIB at all. This is why they started giving separate keys, because they know that. And indie devs are cool with that as long as they earn some bigger numbers.

Long term, giving away bundle keys may be harmful, but for now, the boat stays afloat.

At the same time, I asked groupees guys deliberately if they are ok with me giving a single key to my friend, and they told me "of course you can", so it seems like the only guys that aren't supporting keys sharing are HIB guys.
Post edited July 18, 2013 by keeveek
Honestly, I think if the bundles really wanted/needed to enforce this "rule", then they wouldn't give you separate keys in the first place. Of course they're going to say that they'd rather you bought several copies instead of splitting one copy. More copies sold=more money for them. That's just good business sense. Would you listen to your local supermarket if they told you that you shouldn't split a pack of chips with your friends, but should each buy a separate pack? I'm sure if they'd love it if they could do that.

Also, I hugely resent people trying to push their moral values onto others. About GOG's verdict on this? I honestly think they never had a place in this conversation. I suppose I'll respect their opinion on their own site and not post (any more) bundle keys here. But I'll just do steamgifts giveaways instead. I never used to tbh, hence why I had such a large collection of spare bundle keys, but I will from now on consider it each time a little protest against people who would try to regulate what I'd do with my own stuff :)

Just wanted to clarify, Christ is a title, not a name.

And according to popular swearing, Jesus's middle name begins with H.

There are many ways for HB to address the issue on their own.

– Don't give out individual keys
That's what they used to do and gave up. They knew very well why people wanted individual keys and yet they obliged. It's a bit two-faced to go "Yeah, we know that you want individual keys so that you can give unneeded ones to others. So here you go but please don't give them to others.". To be able to pass on individual keys is precisely the reason why people wanted them in the first place. If you don't want individual keys passed on, don't provide individual keys. It's that simple.

– Make customers choose between DRM free and a single bundle Steam key
Another big "problem" are customers who are content with the DRM free download and pass on their Steam keys. Again, very easy to solve on the side of HB: Don't give out two for the price of one. DRM free OR Steam bundle key, not both. There, problem solved. No more gifting unused Steam keys. And all without brow-beating or guilt-tripping third parties into enforcing your TOS that you seem unbothered to enforce yourself.

And that's not even touching the logistical nightmare that is checking every single Steam key offered on GOG for a potential HB origin.

There are a few situations where I would regard sharing codes as.. okay.

For example, you purchased Game X on Steam (instance #0) and then later down the line got a Steam key for Game X in a bundle (instance #1). Let's say in this example, you only got Steam keys from the bundle (no direct downloads or anything).

You could view this situation in such a way that by purchasing another license from the bundle, the bundle license becomes the license you use and the original license has been changed into a giftable key.

A little mental gymnastics, sure, but an understandable position to take, I think.[1]

Now, the people who buy a bundle, use the direct download for themselves and give a Desura key to one person and a Steam key to another.. well, that can be a really low move in my opinion (especially if they trade them away).

[1] A position I don't take myself for I am a dragon and \o_hoard ALL the keys!

amok: This is a DD store which is built on establishing trust with the customer, respecting them and asking for their respect in turn. It therefore saddens me to see givaways such as this: http://www.gog.com/forum/general/to_giveaway_or_not_to_giveaway being
And why exactly does that specific giveaway sadden you? I made that (non-)giveaway to see exactly what others felt about. And ultimately I did decide not to give away the extra keys.
