If you can, get a FLAC-capable player. Once you go FLAC, you never go back :P.

They might be hard to find and slightly expensive but at least you'll get better sound output than you would with MP3s.

This . . (along with foobar2000 for ripping to FLAC) . . . =)

Edit: You can find the files needed for foobar2000 to rip to the FLAC format here if anyone is interested. Just unpack and put them in the foobar200\components directory (flac.exe, flac_mac.exe, flac_ren.exe, metaflac.exe)

A bit on the higher side of your budget, but the Sony Walkman MP3 players are actually very good. I received a 545 model over Christmas, and have loved it. There is a 544 model (8GB) that comes in under $100 though, and I imagine it is just as good. The reviews for it seem pretty positive.

JudasIscariot: I use my Sony PSP as an MP3/FLAC player. Yes, it's a little bulky but I can just about play all formats on it and I can change the amount of memory within it.
Only thing about this is that I keep having to interrupt games to play music D:

I'm also looking for an MP3 player currently and was also looking at the Sansa Clip. Especially since I need at least 16gb and it has expandable memory.

Still, at least it works quite well with the right software :D.

Too bad we can't get a multi-tasking PSP that can handle a bunch of different tasks all at once.

It's just especially annoying in Persona 3 if I can't find a teleport in the middle of a dungeon.

Don't know about you but I seem to enter right next to the damn things :P

Arianus: Granted with the Zune you do use Microsofts software, but honestly its no different then Apples IPOD software.

Stuff: I agree, no different from iPod. She was used to dragging and dropping files to her player and found it annoying that she had to use the MS program (had to create an account IIRC), especially did not like the ads, etc. She uses it every day now with no complaints, just prefers being able to do the transfers manually.

No big deal, especially if you have always had a mp3 player that required software for access. Just wanted to mention the requirement for the consideration of others who may prefer the manual method . . . =)

As long as you only load songs at home or on another computer that has the Zune software installed . . . not a problem . . . of course the software wants to "sync" every time you plug it in . . . =D

nondeplumage: It's pretty damn odd that just about all the reviews have about 15% saying any given mp3 player is a money eating shit stain just waiting to die on you.

Stuff: My old Creative 1 GB and 20 GB players from several years ago play as if they were new. I wanted more space hence the purchase of a new player. When I started reading reviews about the "new" creatives i was surprised at how many complaints there were from all sources. They were rated so low on dependability that I did not consider buying another one even though the two I owned worked perfectly, seems to be a quality problem with the Creative players now.

I ended up buying a Cowan which has worked flawlessly since I bought it, the player is not for everyone, but the sound quality, battery life and multiple file format support was what won me over. May tell a different story as time goes on but for now . . . best player I ever had . . . =)

My only complaint about the Cowon is the interface is not as intuitive as my 1 GB and 20 GB Creative interfaces were but . . . there are way, way more options to deal with including video support which I like.
You do not need to have an account to use the program.

Good info, thanks, I must be remembering a the product registration that occurred during the software install???

Be sure to see if you can tell the difference between a FLAC and a high-quality MP3 first. With a portable player it's doubtful you would be able to.

EDIT: And I recommend the Clip. It's freaking small, and it's awesome.

Maybe it was for the actual Zune service, which you can use to download / rent / buy music.

EDIT: It is a good service (at least judging by what people say), but too bad it is US only.

I believe you are correct, it seemed to be an account for a "service" but integrated into the management software. It offered music purchasing, etc etc. She had no use for it but IIRC you had to join in order for the software to install. This was last Dec and I have not looked at it since so . . .

An hour after gifts were unwrapped we were still trying to get music on her Zune (she wanted a Zune). We got her sister a Cowon D2+ and she was loaded within 15 minutes.

Hahah, yea, :) it takes a bit of getting used to, and learning how the software functions... Same thing with my Windows Phone, I was messing around with it for few days, before finally setting it exactly how I want.

It is all great now, it does everything automatically when I connect the phone, no need to bother with which things to transfer and all that.

KavazovAngel: ...
Hehe, yeah, it was mostly my fault. We gave them Creative players over the years and taught them how to manage their music as if it were another drive. They became exceptionally efficient at doing so. Needless to say, when she had to learn the software method . . . she was not happy (16 yrs old). The Zune didn't even show up in Widows Explorer.

The younger one (7 yrs old) just plugged in her old Creative Zen and the Cowon, copied her music and was up in running immediately . . . that did not please the older niece . . . =)

Stuff: foobar2000 for ripping to FLAC
Don't ever do that.
When you rip to flac you might as well do it properly instead of getting flawed rip
Just because a codec is lossless doesn't mean the rip is truly lossless unless you use proper ripping method

You need to apply read offset correction and possibly prevent your cd/dvd drive from caching audio data
foobar2000 can't do either of those operations unless something has changed recently and there are only 3 programs capable of doing these operations: EAC (Exact Audio Copy), dBpoweramp and XLD

Here's fairly good guide to setting up EAC to do lossless ripping
