You can indeed save him. First time I played the game some years ago, when I bought it, right when I reached Hong Kong I learned that I could have saved him (by fussing around the internet, of course). That was such a let down to me that I never got back into it until recently.
Now I'm almost finishing my first play through. :D

You can apparently save everybody if you play your cards just right. Apparently even "canonical" deaths will be accounted for in dialogue.

They are walk throughs done in real time as you play the game and recorded for others.

I only caught the last few minutes of it but I could hear you fine during that time. I didn't realise me typing stuff in the chat room would show up in your game but I noticed that there was quite a time delay between when I typed and when It showed up.

AFAIK, He can't actually be killed, but if you escape out the window, he will be killed. If you run out the front door of the hotel, he'll survive, and I'm pretty sure even if you get killed between the hotel and battery park, he will still be alive when you awake in prison.
