It was made by BBC and it's great. I really recommend it. But it's TV miniseries, so I won't expect it to make it on DVDs in Canada.

Coelocanth: What was it you didn't like about it? I never read any Dickens until GE last year, but I enjoyed the hell out of it.
Way too drawn out and long-winded. The plot just crawls on without anything happening, and David spends too much time getting lost in his romance fantasies. In the middle of the book, there is this one point where he just refuses to stop ruminating about this girl that he fancies, and that was where I drew the line and decided enough was enough.

Les Mis is the greatest musical ever (I confess I've never read the book), but film versions of musicals rarely do them justice. Perhaps this will be an exception, but I'm not optimistic.

Thanks. How closely does it follow the book? There are a few characters from the cast that appear to be absent.

Unfortunately, I have not yet read the book. I say that as an ashamed former French student. Coelocanth: That's actually a great idea. She's an interesting kid. She's 14 and loves all kinds of different stories. Among her favorites are things like the Harry Potter books, The Giver, To Kill a Mockingbird, Life of Pi, and the School of Essential Ingredients. She's got a pretty eclectic taste considering her age.
It's a great thing she actually reads a lot in the age of 14 since reading among teenagers has been in decline a bit in recent years. It pays off.

Thank you for that! I hadn't heard that version. Utterly gorgeous. One of my favorites from the musical...it's so hard to pick one favorite though.

I just watched the "Live Singing" doco on IMDB's frontpage and I am 98% sold. The only one I am STILL struggling with is Russel Crowe as Javert. I just don't see Rusty as a singer. The rest sound amazing already!
