The Legend of the downrepper

Once upon a time there was a wonderful place where mostly older people went to talk about days gone by and games that were so old that they needed to figure out how to make them work on modern hardware. We will not get into the fact that most of those games sucked back then, and look far worse compared to today's graphics and capabilities, because a few of those Good Ole Games were truly gems.

The curators of this wonderful place decided that they were barely covering maintenance costs for their buffets, well mostly is was those who serves at the castle...yes the servers cost quite a bit of money, so they needed to reach a broader audience. Thus many younger people were invited to join the land. These younger people lived across a vast ocean it would seems because the way to get them here involved sailing...sails...sales, that's it! Most of these younger people found their elders to be kind, and generous and all was well.

But soon a few of the more greedy of the younger players figured out that they could take advantage of this generosity and get a lot of free games, both Good Ole Games and new misty keys...or were the keys steamy? Hard to tell, but I digress. These greedy members began to hang out in the shadows, much the same as the ninjas of times past. Soon they became so used to getting all of the free games or keys ( though the chests that those keys unlock are not often found in this place) that they would get angry if someone else got a game here or there.

Soon any player who won a free game or obtained a key would find that their very kindness was rewarded with evil. They would post a kind thank you to indicate that they had been chosen as a stalwart keeper of a key, and find that their thank you note was hidden and looked down on so much that their very reputation was tarnished. This spread to another thread of fabric, the take one leave one topic. Greedy players would leave worthless keys in exchange for those that were far more valuable so that they would trade those keys with people that were not from around here.

As time went on this evil manifested itself by replacing the poor, who used to seek alms just to make their daily bread with nothing short of beggars, asking not for sustenance, but for riches and keys that they could take to other realm s and exchange them for great wealth and power. Many of the older members disappeared, stricken with a sadness that could not be replaced. Some of them faded into shadows, others flamed out entirely. The legendary hippo, has been rumored to have returned to his gifting pool, but no one has sent it directly. Others have decided to fight back with the mystical power of MAHAYO and other such thoughts as simply spreading positive vibes to every post in the kingdom.

MAHAYO works in the sense that no longer can a ninja simply take what you have left without at least identifying himself, but the vagabonds, known thieves, and worse are still able to take far more than they give. spreading good cheer sound great as well, but falsely increases the reputation of even those who are hanging under the bridge, like trolls. Some people have told the curators of the castle that they need a new world to live in, a world where you are judged by the content of your posts, not by how someone else interprets that content. But alas, the very trolls have increased the size of the curators coffers, even if it is simply because there are more beggars in the streets that for some reason people are still giving things to.

Some day this story will have a different ending.... someone with a crystal ball...or magic eyes, or I dunno a packet sniffer, can say holy shit we are not plagued with a pack of trolls, but two or three who have falsely created alternate versions of themselves to obtain keys, games, gifts, and also to spread out their own negativity across a wider army, while simultaneously downrepping the shit out of the rest of us. A halo or an icon can be added to the avatar of all who have supported this kingdom, so the leaches can be properly identified, and treated appropriately. But alas, when a tell this tale, I am usually told that I am too uptight and I need to relax. So I wait for the time when I am hailed instead of reviled as the trolls. I wait for the time of NOMGITHOL

Not In,but +1
lugum, thanks much and +1. Fun requirement. Not in, my machine won't run this; but boy, does it look like an awesome title. Good luck all!

Just for quick kicks though, an alternative backstory:

Petty thief Grimrock, forgotten in the caverns of LightFade by his imprisoners. Kept alive by a benevolent earth spirit, who wants to use our hero in ringing in a new age of peace and fulfillment. Centuries must pass before all three moons align, but then the rock opens and blue lava springs forth from the depths, taking Grimrock with it to the surface and freedom. Day is almost dawning, as the lava dries on Grimrock's body, from now on providing him with magic-resistant armor. The twisty passages up to the tall towers of the wizard twins beckon; the time has arrived to embrace a redemption-seeking rogue's destiny.

SUMMONED MONSTERS

Many years ago in the world of Angroth, monsters, magic, and man, ruled over everything. There were great wars of mass destruction, people conquering land, and gaining power. There were creatures of unbeatable strength. And as time went by, confusion and chaos grew, and soon people knew that this could not go on. So as a solution to the problem, a few people found a way to lock away monsters, magic, and things, in cards. But of course, not everyone liked this idea, and they fought to stop this, this, card idea! But finally most of all the chaos was locked away in cards.
A little bit later, a game was made out of the cards, they called it SUMMONED MONSTERS. They also made magical card plates, that made holograms of monsters and such, to bring out the best of the battle!
But not all of this part of history was remembered, only a few knew it all.
But there was not complete peace in the land, oh no! There was still a few monsters existing. And a little magic. And evil forces lurking in the deep, waiting to strike….

The Legend of Sweet and Sour
========================
The rattling of chainmail begun to fade in the distance. He released a huge sigh and continued West. The city of Alaristan never sleeps, it lights up the night sky like a torch, he mused. He jumped across a few more rooftops and then silently dropped to the ground.
A knock on the door startled the cook and he almost fell out of his chair as he was dosing in the kitchen. He righted himself up still half asleep and opened the door just a hand's width.
"Oh, it's you Sweet, what do you have this time?"
"Nothing for you, but I might have something for the boss"
"Today I'm the boss"
"And I'm a virgin nun, Sour, cut the crap"
"The boss is out, so I'm the boss today"
"Then say, can you pay me for these?" and Sweet laid out the contents of his bag on the table. Minor trinkets, silverware, rings, broaches and a weird purple-tinted mirror.
"Where the hell did you get these?"
"From Archmagus Yldar"
"What? He's the most evil magus of them all! And you haven't thought for a moment that they might be cursed or worse? Take for instance this mirror..." and he took up the mirror and glanced into it and as he did, he disappeared. Sweet caught the mirror just before it hit the ground or so he thought. But the ground he hit wasn't the kitchen floor but damp earth. And everything was dark.
"Sweet? Is that you?"
"Yes it is you moron, you've just stepped on my hand!"
"Where are we Sweet?"
"How the hell should I know?"
"YOU HAVE TRIED TO STEAL FROM ME! THIS WON'T GO UNPUNISHED! I WILL TURN YOU INTO DUST AND MIX YOU INTO THE FOOD!"
This is how sweet and sour food was invented.

Thanks and I'm in!

Let me try my hand at this, I'm taking a very good story I read and paraphrasing into a legend. Anyone want to give a guess on the work in question? Should be easy enough if you've read it, especially with the ending as it is. :)

In a land where heroes and villains abound, a young girl dreams of becoming a hero. She gets her chance, but as hell is paved with good intentions, she becomes known as a villain instead. Forsaken by heroes and ever striving to do good, the young lass overcomes several challenges and obstacles, obtaining power and influence.

Matters come to a head with a prophecy of world's end and the death of the preeminent hero brought about by the girl. Following a seer's advice, the girl renounces all ties and joins on the heroes' side, with the goal of preventing the coming end.

Long and hard she toils, the heroes ever wary and watchful of her. The moment of prophecy comes and it is all for naught. A god, hiding in plain sight, has turned cruel; lands are destroyed and people extinguished. Those that could, escapes to other places. An attempt is made to stop the mad god. It fails.

The girl, searching for a solution, acquires one of the beasts of calamity that roamed the lands. Others soon follow suit and a grand battle between them and the mad god ensues. In that battle, the girl gains a singular focus allowing her to lead the heroes as one would move game pieces on a board.

She goes on to gather more people under her banner, both hero and villain, before facing the mad god and, with all the forces arrayed by her, kill the being and its source of power. In the end, she disappears to parts unknown, though all she brought together will remember her and her deeds.
