Hello Fellows,
today, I wish to discuss my unwillingness to try new games. Or at least, games I haven't played before. Why don't I wish to play them? On the contrary, I'm very interested in gaming, and would love to play new games. But I'm not willing to gamble with my money. Many games on here, are quite good games, but will they speak to me? Will I enjoy it as much as the next person?
There's a new game on here, Arx Fatalis, which I'm interested in buying, but the unusual spellcasting system puts me off. Why? I simply can't be arsed to learn a new system. But why not? Because, I'm lazy.
This is a horrible syndrome, I hate it, it is bad for both buyer and seller.
This combined with purchases already made this year.. makes me unwilling to take part in the special deal, the buy 2 $9.99 games and get one $5.99 game free. However interested I am in utilizing this special, I cannot.
All of the $9.99 games, are games I'm extremely unfamilliar with, and don't know which I'd like to purchase, what would be best for me. I was leaning towards the Unreal collection, but I intend on finding the title for much cheaper via discs on an outside source. I am leaning towards getting Second sight, but one of 3 titles is simply not enough to take part in this deal. I also find that the selection of $5.99 games frightens me as well, as I have all the $5.99 games that are must buys to me. I might see about Flatout, and 1nsane looks like an interesting $9.99 title as well, but I don't like racing games.. I like burnout paradise, but it's not really much of a racing game, more like an antiracing game.
Anyway, I mostly wanted to share my problem and find out if there are any others like me, who have Lazy Gamer Syndrome. It's frustrating wanting to try new things, but at the same time, not wanting to be disappointed.
EDIT:
is this really worth a minus one? post in this thread and say why, or are you too chicken?

I have to say I share your problem specifically with Arx Fatalis, but I base it on being frustrated with Black and White's similar spell system, as well as some Wii titles that require certain movements to perform actions, so I'm unwilling to try that again.
I guess I appreciate the developer trying something new, but it's not for me. Whereas, I have bought Evolva and Giants: Citizen Kabuto, because I heard good things back in the day, and I'd like to try them now, and when I bought them the exchange rate was very good anyway, so if I don't like them, it won't be a huge loss.
I have the problem that I am not that interested in many of the $9.99 titles, or at least some of them I think are not worth $9.99.
Trying a new system is not too big of an issue with me, but playing games through to the end is a bigger problem for me personally.
Games have a tendency to wear thin as they go along and I tend to lose interest.
I am willing to try Arx Fatalis, but it is very hard to find a second title. That is why I asked in a different thread if the sale could extend 24 hours longer to include Port Royale which is a game I had in the past and should have never gotten rid of.
As to lazy, I am not sure. Maybe for me personally, it is too many games are like, too many other games. When you played one you more or less played them all, so my interest wanes.

You're definitely not alone.
I'm a semi-lazy gamer; I have played a lot of demos but end up investing in only a few percent of them (which still works out to a couple of hundred...). It pains me that demos are getting more rare (and harder to download) all of the time.

I used to have game ADD like that, until I played through and finished a few games which blew me away with their endings.
Diablo I + II, Final Fantasy VII, Deus Ex and Portal were all good games that turned into all-time-great-games when I finished them. Now I try to finish all of my games (even FF12, erk) - though unfortunately I'm disappointed more often than not.

domgrief: FF12, erk.

that's a game that's sure to disappoint.
As far as finishing a game goes, sometimes I buy games that are astronomically bad (Double Dragon on XBLA and Too Human on xbox 360) and I finish those games, because they are so bad. I don't feel like I can talk trash about a game unless I finish it, unless the game is unfinishable (I.E. Prey). Lately though, I can't think of any games that I can't or refuse to finish, other than Dead Rising, mostly though that's because of a strange Zombie-phobia that somehow, I'm able to overcome when playing Left 4 Dead.. maybe because you play with other people in Left 4 Dead, it's not so scary, or maybe because Left 4 Dead is fairly cartoonish (like Stubbs The Zombie was, great btw).

I figure it's Unfinishable because it's so dang boring.. hahaha, great level design but the gameplay is so repetitive, I couldn't finish it!

Ah, well there's no accounting for taste.
Just play genres that appeal to you. I get games based on that and I can check who was the lead developer and have a good idea about how well the game might be.

I assume most people do. Who'd buy an FPS if they hated that sort of game? And I don't think most gamers know too much about too many individual developers. The fact is, even within a very specific genre, there are games that are executed well, and games that are executed poorly. Also, there are elements of a game that may appeal to some, but not to others.
All in all, both quality and personal taste plays into how well you like any game, and there really isn't any substitute for sitting down and playing it, to find out whether you like it or not.

The difficulty here, is that I do like the Fantasy RPG genre, but I am not sure of some older games, I mean, that and I'm not experienced to too many developers for the PC. I don't know, maybe I have impossibly high expectations of a game, because my first PC game that I really sat down with was Counter-Strike: Condition Zero (ok really it was blood rayne, but fark that crap). I still play CS:CZ to this day.
Just following a sole developer isn't going to help much, especially if you're the type of person who wants to branch out. That fear of buying something that you don't know you'll enjoy can be crippling. I don't know why, but for Fallout 1 & 2, the decision was easy, even though I'm not a big fan of isometric RPGS (Not a big fan of Diablo, don't hate it, just meh.. it's good, I won't deny that, just doesn't speak to me).
Maybe it's because I heard of the fevor of people who played the game, I don't know. But many of these games look interesting and at the same time, there are things I don't like about what I see. Maybe I'm just nitpicking too much. Maybe it isn't much to lose either, but that's money that I could be putting to something I'd use better. It's very conflicting and confusing for me. I don't want to be a gamer who only plays certain games, I want to branch out, but I also want to buy games I'll enjoy.
As far as Prey goes, I knew it wasn't a great game, the reviews came out way before hand, but I figured I'd give it an honest try, and despite some very neat mechanics and interactions sometime after being abducted I found myself falling asleep. Also, I picked up the game with store credit and returned it for the same value so it was sort of for free. :3
Well after reviewing the Unreal Anthology pack, I'm not really that interested in half the games in it, the only ones I'm interested in are UT2k4 and UTGOTY, and I have GOTY, so I just decided I'd get Freespace 2 (hey at least there's a soundtrack), UT2k4, and Second Sight. I got in a buying mood since I won my cash money from wegame.com Although, I got 150 bucks and I only bought one game for me.. "The Witcher Enhanced Edition" the rest I got stuff for my kids, my girlfriend and a birthday present for my brother. At least that didn't all have to come out of my pocket this holiday season.

Haha, it was. The fact that you COULDN'T DIE just compounded that fact.
Finished in a day.

I can't believe you got a -1 for that. Stupid rep system = epic failure of this site.
Well, I love Bloodrayne too! It's a fun game.

She got a minus one, for giving me one, because I don't like Blood Rayne. :P
