Actually, it's worse than that (he's dead Jim). Most rereleases of Morrowind don't even have a disc in them - just a Steam key.

That being said, the Elder Scrolls Anthology DOES have the DRM-free versions of Morrowind GOTY and Oblivion GOTY. Skyrim Legendary Edition still requires Steam though. The enclosed Steam key includes Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. A much better deal if you ask me, although the enclosed version of Arena is just the same floppy version they were offering for free bundled with DOSBox. Still, it's nice to have a proper pressed version of Arena and Daggerfall.
And to think I picked it up brand new in the UK in 2002 for a miserly 3 pounds (picked it up together with the X-Wing Collection rerelease, which I still have).

Not so fast. :-) As a matter of fact I have installed XIII(which I purchased on January as part of this pack). I just got around to installing it, however, a couple of days ago(backlog kept me away-and also I recently felt in a mood to play a cell-shaded FPS) and I discovered it was, practically, DRM-free. That is it offered a full install option, which installed all the contents of the disc on my PC and when I tried to run it, I ejected the CD to see if it could run without it, and it could ! I also tried to run it with my pc offline and it was fine. Worked pretty much just like a GOG game(and without having to download it-which is the phase I least like-my internet connection isn't very good). And did I mention it didn't require Steam at all ?
And that's why I keep buying retail games-if one pays attention, he can get a retail game resembling the old times in DRM-freeness and with a good price !

P.S. XIII used to be indeed on GOG, but was removed long before I joined, as far as I know.

Most of them resemble old times because they're old games (that doesn't make them bad, it would just be nice to see new stuff). Risen 3 and The Witcher 3 ahoy though - both going to be DRM-free at retail. A lot of indie games make it to retail here in Germany as well in DRM-free form - Don't Starve, Cognition, Tiny & Big, Vessel, Moebius: Empire Rising, Battle Worlds: Kronos, Limbo, Braid for example.

Of course, I know there are still DRM-free retail games (the upcoming release of Risn 3 is enough to make me wish I was German), mine was just a little joke! ;)
Anyway, the amount of Steam-requiring physical copies is becoming really impressive... especially when, after you install the game from the disc, you need to download GIANT updates with your (in this case, mine) crappy internet connection, making the whole point of buying physical useless. Does the name "Orange Box" ring a bell?

The pack you posted contains old games and I have not seen many companies (with the exception of Bethesda) that have retroactively added DRM to their older games. Fun fact; I have a Far Cry Collections Disc (this one) that says on the back of its cover that it requires online activation, but it really doesn't.

My point, though, is that I will not find retail versions of games like Alien Breed, Deus Ex: Human Revolutions, Shadow Warrior (2013) and Skyrim that don't demand Steam. It's gotten to the point that I was dumbstruck when I heard that the latest expansion of SpellForce 2, Demons of the Past had a DRM-Free retail release.

As for XIII, it was removed on January 1, 2013.

Precisely, although in most cases, you can at least fall back on console versions. I actually bought Shadow Warrior for PC though (through Humble Store), so I was somewhat miffed to discover that a boxed PS4 version is coming out.

Of course. I dislike pre-owned games, because I found out that the majority of people out there has no fucking respect for their own stuff. It's "their" stuff, indeed, and it won't become mine - not even by chance.

Well, the announcement is only 6 days old, so the preorder page may yet be forthcoming.

I wonder if this is going to be an ongoing thing though. Devolver Digital are a DD-only company, but I wonder if we're going to see more boxed releases of Devolver's indie releases through Majesco? Certainly an intriguing prospect.
