Hello all. I have a problem with my Toshiba satellite. Windows 7.

About four days ago, i noticed a problem. When I left my laptop unattended and it went on standby, the screen would go Black and become unresponsive. When I reset it, I could log back in though it would sometimes go black on the log-in screen.
Now, it always goes Black on the log-in screen. The windows loading screen finishes and my mouse appears but the screen remains black.

I've tried booting into safe mode but even in safe mode it goes straight to a black screen with the cursor, which remains operable.

I haven't been able to open it up yet to tinker inside as it's late and I don't have any tools with me.



I've just started a MSc, this is quite frustrating. Both due to a lack of funds but also lack of time. Any help would be appreciated.

Happened to my old laptop 3 times. Your HDD died so if it still under warranty send it back otherwise try to change the HDD with an spare one that you have. Also check out this link might help you out

Already done. I often have my laptop connected to a monitor. The monitor remains unresponsive as if it doesn't even receive a signal. I also booted using the safe mode restricted screen size option.

My hard drive is still listed in the boot menu and my mouse is centre on the screen. But that's as good a lead as any. If I was at home I could easily check. Maybe I can find someone willing to let me switch out hard drives.

Besides the monitor and mouse, what else do you have plugged-in to it? Mine won't finish boot if my phone is plugged-in. As soon as I unplug, it proceeds to boot.

Nothing. With and without monitor. With and without power cable. With and without battery.

Stop wasting your time with other things, same thing happened to me 3 times and each time the HDD was corrupted xD Your HDD will show up in the boot up menu has nothing to do with it being corrupted because you CAN fix it (but it will cost you a lot) unless you are expert in it. Also if you go to HDD test you will see that your hard drive passes the first stages and will freeze on the last stage.

I wish I was back in the UK at times like this. I have all the equipment I need. Not to mention that everything is in Korean out here : (

So I got an external hard drive and plugged my hard drive into another computer. I can access all of my files from it. There seems to be some corruption in the core windows program that is preventing log-in. I'll copy all my most important files and then see if I can repair it without having to reformat. Would be pretty useful having a win7 cd right about now.

Take a look at My Digital Life Forums, they should have MS links to get a Win7 iso. You may need to look around a bit though :/

Thanks for the help all. In the end I stuck my hard drive into a portable caddy, accessed my data through that (no problem) and reinstalled windows. My laptop is working again just fine. I checked it for viruses and nothing came up so I can only imagine that during the last update something went pretty wrong. I managed to keep everything except my most recent tabs on firefox : )
