Arkose: To clarify, this is about games that do not provide a way of saving manually. Automated checkpoints are great but should always be included alongside manual/quick saves, never as a replacement for them.

F4LL0UT: To clarify, I genuinely hate the ability to quick save.
But isn't it better to have a choice?

Only if quick saving is exclusively available in a difficulty mode with a humiliating name like "pussy mode" or "no challenge mode" or maybe even... "debug mode".

I'm starting to think there is a personal grudge here somewhere. Tell me son, did he touch you anywhere?!

[ ] You have children.

I don't know how many times I died or otherwise messed up in a game because I got distracted by 12 kilos of 3-year-old jumping on me or hitting me with "a magic wand" or spilling her drink over me.

I don't know how many times I had to instantly quit playing because something messy happened in the next room.

I don't know how many times I missed essential information in a NPC dialog because one of my kids had to tell me very important things on her mind right now.

I don't know how many times something went awry in a game because my little one had to try what would happen if she also hit some keys like her dad. And if not the little one, it would be the cat swaggering across the keyboad obscuring the screen *Meow!*

I don't know how many times I cursed the Skyrim UI developers (until I found the Block-Steal-Mod).

I also second people saying that dialog choices often are not what they seem. To choose and live with the outcome you have to have all the information. An educated guess is not enough.

Still, I can see that manual saving is not for every game. I wouldn't want to quicksave just before the next corner in a racing game. I wouldn't want to to quicksave just before firing my missile in Falcon 4. I would like more checkpoints in OpF/ArmA-CWA, but as it is the game always creates a save if you have to quit - I can live with that. It would be okay for more games to have an Iron-Man-mode like Alpha Centauri. Only one save that gets overwritten every turn - live with your decisions.

This. If you can't stop yourself from abusing it, you are the problem, not the feature.

Well that sums up my life right.

That bastard! By the nine Cheesecake Lords of Baconville. I demand we have his head!
I really hate when I can't save in a game. I mostly play RPGs, and being forced to replay huge portions of the game because saving was not allowed is very annoying.
Why am I not allowed to play a single player offline games the way I want it? Who am I hurting if I save my game in the privacy of my apartment on my private computer?

Also I quite often like exploring other dialogue options, just for fun. I'm curious what happens if my char is a jerk, even if I don't want to roleplay as a jerk, simply because jerk stuff is usually more funny.
Cryptic dialogue choices also drive me mad. I shouted "WTF I DIDN'T MEAN TO SAY THIS!!" more times I cared to count -.-
Mis-clicking also happens. "I didn"t mean to chose this/steal that" etc.

I sometimes skip cutscenes. I accidentaly press a button, the phone rings (it always rings during a cutscene -.-), my brother comes to my room telling me something etc. Why should I start from 30 minutes earlier, in order to see the damn scene again? Or sometimes the cutscene is just so EPIC that I want to watch it again. And again.
In some adventure games puzzles are so fun, that I save before solving them, and sometimes I reload and solve them again, just for fun.

Also, there is this magical thing, called "real life". If real life calls, I got to go, and I don't want to be punished for it, especially not by a game that I play for enjoyment.

I often quicksave my game, and use multiple save slots to avoid save file corruption. And not just in games, but in other programs as well. I save often, and keep backup copies of everything.
Multiple save spots are especially important when playing modded games.

IMO games does not meant to cause annoyance.
If for someone "playing hardcore" means "replaying long portions of the game while shouting every single curse word they know, bangig the keyboard with their fists", then have it their way, but let me play the game the ways I enjoy it, without shouting and cursing.

Nope. If the game provides you with features that you're conditioned to use and which make the game unfun if overused it's bad design. It's like an overpowered weapon having infinite ammo or having access to infinite bullet time. You're not gonna say "you're abusing the weapon/feature, you are the problem!", right? You're gonna say "the game is too easy and boring, the designers screwed up!". And quick saving is in my book the worst offender because it's not even officially a skill of the protagonist or otherwise part of the game world.
F4LL0UT: How about You unbind that Button?

its not the shops or fridges fault if one eats too Much.

I am really not following why you dislike it. You're just assuming everyone uses it every 2 seconds. Just because you're "super hardcore " anyone else who uses it cheats. That is all I'm getting here. Might as well stop where you're at.
