I know that the Earth Trilogy does but I'm looking for something more turn-based.

I thought this feature was awesome in Fallen Enchantress after trying my hand at building warriors using mostly regen equipment and giving them all a light blue hue to distinguish them.

Well if you liked it in FE you might give Galactic Civilizations 2 a try if you haven't already. ( GalCiv3 of course, but it isn't ready yet)

EDIT: And a little off-topic, but Distant Worlds is not a shabby game either, but it's real time with pause. If that's close enough to turn based for you, it might be worth your time.

GC2 was one of the first games I bought after returning to PC during the coming of 360/PS3.

It was so complex it was a bit intimidating - Like Space Empires but maybe I'll pull it back out again.

And thanks for the Distant Worlds link.

If you don't have it with the expansions, I'd recommend you buy them if you've got a few bucks laying about. That said, the final expansion (Twilight of the Arnor) comes with a campaign that will just punch you in the junk all day until you die from it, so you might want to play that one down a difficulty level or two.

Ha ha thanks for the warning.
Missionforce Cyberstorm has several basic designs you can outfit with eq and weapons. It plays on a hexgrid and always has the same size maps. Bad side you have to play it in a VM, because it doesn't work on 64bit Win7 and above. Did play it a bit yesterday and enjoy it much.
If it doesn't matter that fights are in space and not on planetside you could try Master of Orion 2, but it has more than just tactical combat, for me its the best 4x game with good and simple interface and lots of fun.

I <3 Missionforce: Cyberstorm. It is not a better game than X-COM: Enemy Unknown, but I liked it more. :P

Also, someone should recommend Alpha Centauri, which has fantastic unit customization and is one of the best 4X games every made. And the Battle Isle games which inspired Kronos. I backed BW: Kronos on Kickstarter, and when I played it, I was reminded of both Deadlock: Planetary Conquest. and MAX.

Ooo! Ooo! MAX is a phenomenal game with tons of customization and some very rock-paper-scissors combat. MAX2 is a steaming pile of garbage, in my opinion, but I can heartily recommend the first.
I second M.A.X. (the first one). Every unit can be upgraded to your own liking (armor, health, attack power, ammunition, more shots per round, speed, range, vision). Also offers a campaign mode, multiplayer (loved that hot-seat mode when i was "young") and skirmish mode for infinite replayability. The graphics on the first one still look great (for a game that old). And it's just 5.99. What are you waiting for?
Warzone 2100 is an RTS that offers unit customization in three categories: hull, mobility, and turret. Among those three categories are a very wide variety of choices gained through the research tree. Units earn experience through kills and there are something like 5 to 7 experience levels depending on the unit type.

The game is free, no DRM, and is found here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/warzone2100/

The main website is wz2100.net

Enjoy!
You can design your own space ships in Imperium Galactica 2 (there's an iOS version and a Win version, though I've heard that Win7 and Vista are tough on it).

Empire Earth gives you the ability to make upgrade decisions on your units (more health, more vs. x armor, more speed, more range, more raw attack power, more area damage).

Any chance there will ever be a Windows 8 fix for Deadlock 2?

I think I have MAX on GOG already - I should probably check it out.

Also: This is almost exactly what I'm looking for but it only features infantry units and appears to only take place indoors.

Isn't that the earliest prototype of what became known as 'The Earth trilogy'?

Normally I would have jumped on something new to learn and pulled VBox after researching what you're talking about but the past six months have found me much lazier and seeking instant gratification.

I have speculated on that myself but don't have a clear answer. I haven't played the Earth Trilogy games but from the screenshots and descriptions, plus the similar use of (later) years in the names, it would seem to be a possibility. However, the wikipedia entry for Earth 2150 (credible?) says they're not at all related.

Warzone has nothing to do with the Earth games .
Well there we go. I can cross "Find out if Warzone 2100 and the Earth Trilogy are related" off my bucket list. XD

Thanks.
