The remakes are also illegal from the way I understand it as the real games are still being actively sold.

Case in point

Also, they were not made with the permission of the current copyright holder with is a bigger deal than you may think...

The only legal King's Quest fangame that I truly know of is the Silver Lining as its team has the okay from the current copyright holders (& they had to fight like hell to get it.)

Yes, but since they aren't selling it, and the credit all goes to the copyright owner, it's not so bad.
Although, I see your point, and it would've been better if it was just a patch or something to improve the original game bought legally.

The remakes aren't illegal, so long as they're remakes of the CGA versions. I'm not sure how that works, but the remaker had official permission from Sierra.

This is my version of the broke A@@ gamer that the old GT4 show used to have. There is more out there you just have to look for the company sanctioned games

The remakes are officially sanctioned, they were granted a 'fan license'. The reason the continued freeware games were at first denied release is because they continue the story, rather than remaking existing ones, and that's a bit more of a problem than just straight remaking something.

Yes they are pretty amazing when you compare the originals.

It would also be nice if the people behind GOG would try to remake one old great original, if they could get the go ahead from the parent company. Just to see how the game would sell and if GOG could possibly do more remakes?

Those are the official games being released by the copyright holders.... there is a major difference between the copyright holders releasing there copyrighted material for free & somebody else remaking those games using copyrighted images, characters & stories for free without express permission for said copyright holders. That is not to say that all fan games are illegal. Like I said.... the Silver Lining is legal & some places (like Capcom) even show off fan games on there site from time to time (Megaman 2.5D anyone). Sega is another company who seems so be okay with it as the talk about how they appreciate the effort put into the games by there fans on there official forums when asked about fangames. That doesn't mean that everybody is cool with it though... like I said, look at the struggles the Silver Lining team had to go through to be able to release the game.

Vivendi no longer holds the copyright... even if they did, who says the remake team had permission? They may have just not gotten caught.

I wouldn't even say anything about the matter if TSL team didn't go through so much shit... it just seems that if one team went through so much shit trying to make an ORIGINAL game based on the KQ world, then it is almost certain that these guys who posted these REMAKES to games that are still being sold online without so much as a single threat probably didn't really get permission.
