I just started watching it too. Netflix streaming Ftw - could not stop watching until 7 episodes had gone by. Preparing to start on the other 7 followed by the movie Serenity.

Some minor spoilers ahead

Nah I don't remember that being much of an issue - however there are one or two pretty intense moments (nasty violence) which you may not want them watching. For instance, in one episode, "Arial" there's a 2min segment featuring a pretty nasty weapon that could be disturbing for someone very young.

The movie was okay, but I feel like "reset" a lot of crew character interactions back to the pilot so when I saw it after the pilot it made perfect sense, but after finishing the series I can see why some fans of the series didn't like it. They also focused a lot on the bad guy's character, the Agent (who to be fair was a really good character, but he was brand new to the movie), and his interaction with the crew rather than focusing on the crew interaction like the series. I think the series did a better job handling the Reavers. Every SCIFI monster is better when you don't see them and in the movie they came off less scary (although there was a very scary scene with them and again you never see it happening it is all in your imagination).

One thing though about Firefly, because of its aborted status judging the overall quality can be hard. After all it didn't get the time it should've to develop and finish its plot. On the other it also didn't have time to sink into mediocrity as some shows that start off strong do. So either way comparing to ST or SW or other longer running SF shows is not really possible. :/ And that's in some ways why it is such a shame it got cancelled.

Although I am not sure to which mechanic you are referring ... the one on the Chief's crew? I don't want describe more since I am trying to avoid spoilers. Because she had an extremely different personality/position from the engineer in Firefly. :)

However, apparently the BSG guys were fans of Firefly and in apparently one of the scenes before the Cylons attack you can see a Firefly flying around Caprica. :) That's what I was told anyway. I seem to remember it being true.

That episode is what really drove home for me how insanely hot the female cast was. Christina Hendricks shows up all sexied up and it's just like "Enh, she's cute. OMG go back to Kaylee fixing things!"

I'm sure that show would have eventually run out of brilliant, but it never got the chance to, and that's a shame.

Never said anything of the sort. I just don't like how Sex is tacked on in Sci Fi. Imagine the Romance you're reading just has a prolonged car chase for no reason. Sex is fine but I just think it was used in firefly and many other sci fi shows and films to just be edgy. and that's what I don't like about it. The Class of Super diplomat whores just felt silly to me and drug the show down and the sexual tension between the Captain and the Companion and the fact that the mechanic is portrayed as nymphomaniac (in the movie towards the end, the promise of sex gives her the will to live.) honestly were really painful and detracted on the many other good things of the show.

Anyway, on topic - The best episode in my opinion is the last one "Objects in space". Not that they aren't all awesome, but they definitely get better as they go on. "Out of gas" is also one of my favourites, and if I ever show the series to anyone, I'll definitely trick them into believing that it's the very last episode they made. Would add an extra element of suspense to it.

I think that Firefly has to be one of the worst SciFi shows I have seen, I also hated the Buffy TV series too and that was before I realized that both of them were made by the same guy ... then I started looking around some more and realized that Firefly was more than anything else a cheaply done live action version Titan A.E. (another whedon title) that focused on the Pick ship captain, added in an undertone of "ohhhh, your gonna see some fucking next episode", replaced the static cling monster conflict with a pro-southern bending post US civil war restoration theme, and then dressed up racial stereotypes instead of paying for alien makeup (like the rich sadist jew & how the worst enemy the ship has to deal with is a big scary Nigger psychopath that threatens to rape Kaylee).

... I'm ok now, sry to rant it's just that Firefly really sets me off. I know that the whole space western/ronin kinda thing is a sadly over neglected genera outside of Video games, Anime, and Manga but I found FireFly to be a massive let down to the point of regressing the whole genre, 'cause now people are looking at this thing whenever the subject of Sci Fi TV shows come up instead of looking back to the Showtime era of SG1/the Outerlimits or DS9's Dominion war arc.

I absolutely love Firefly but found Serenity disappointing. I felt like it undid a lot of character development and didn't work well as an ending to the series.

About the guns, I'm sorry if it was mentioned before because I didn't read the whole thread, but there are lasers and stuff in Firefly they're just not very reliable and take too much energy. The Alliance also has some pretty cool sci-fi non-lethal weapons.

Guns are simple and will still kill just as well in the future, I think they were trying to show that not everything needs to get needlessly complicated and science-fictiony just because it's the future.

Honestly the sex they used in the new Battlestar did put me off as it felt like a cheap grab for attention "hey we got sex and nakied people - watch uss"

However firefly was slightly different I felt - it felt more realistic in the worldset it was based in and felt like it was part of the story not a throwin to boost its ratings. Heck most of the intimate interactions are more of the beginnings or endings you don't really see anyone going at it with anyone (that I recall) but you get some strong hints in some scenes.

I think its just that firefly didn't regard nudity in its presentation as something untoward that shouldn't be done - so you have nude scenes (though I can't recall ever seeing anything more extreme than a bare chest on a guy and shoulders on the ladies - I don't' think there's one exposed boob nor groin in the whole series --- though you do see somewhat most of Mal in one.

You know it was nice that someone proved once and for all that this could be done in an exciting way.
I love Firefly and have never seen a single episode of Dollhouse and maybe 2 of Buffy. Firefly really is a stand out piece of work. I know a lot of people who loved it and were rather disappointed with a lot of other Whedon stuff.
I think it's inspired quite a bit of bloodshed over the centuries as well:)

Hey the original Stargate early series and minifilms were good solid sci-fi. It's only that they kept Stargate going way too long (a similar problem that I think plagued Buffy as well) to the point where they got sloppy. Aliens all ended up speaking American, the stories got repetitive and the tech escalation got a little silly.

It just got too long in the tooth and shifted from strong sci-fi to a lighter hearted series that wasn't quite taking itself so serious anymore (I mean heck they pulled in the mad sci-fi guy from Farescape ;))

Here's my problem with SG fans, everyone I know watched every episode and every spinoff series, no matter how awful. This seriously calls their taste into question, which in itself doesn't mean what you say about the early shows is untrue but gives me strong pause. Now I no longer recall what season the very few episodes I've watched of SG were in, but they were garbage (to me at least).

Now it's possible that one might say: SG s1 was awesome and they'd be right (I don't know that I've watched season 1) but people say SG was awesome... and as a whole it was a really weak show. Again, that's opinion, but when most people say you've had more bad seasons than good and you've spawned spinoffs with absolutely no redeeming qualities it's not a recommendation to me.

SG1 was always slightly less than coherent, but the earlier 3 or 4 seasons (as in, before SyFy took over) were still plenty fun ... everything past that is shit.

once again, everything past the SyFy take over is shit but thankfully that was only one season instead of seven ... sadly, all I can point you towards as far as experiencing them ATM is the first season DVD collection from MGM because all the other releases (including another version of the first season) were released by a Canuck-a-dian company that edited /altered all the scenes with nudity or sex (it was a showtime series after all).
