There are also some subtle bits in it too - for example the cameras used for the Serentiy scenes (in the TV series) are mostly handheld and cheaper - whilst in the Military ships they use fixed cameras (ie cameras on tollies and supports) so that you get that rustic feel even in the visuals when on Serenity.
Also note the space scenes - notice the TOTAL LACK OF SOUND!
Overall it was a series that broke from the norm of sci-fi; broke from the "monster of the week" concept that so many of them build upon and was - generally -a really fun space cowboy romp with a story. Sadly it fell apart and I doubt that we'll see it again (even if they could get the funding and the original cast it woudl be hard to recapture the same magic).
The film is - its a rushed 1.5 seasons of content pushed into a single display. So its got some rough edges to it as a result and some random bits that feel cheap - but overall its a good film and well presented. It stands well, though we lament that we know it could have been a lot better.
PS - after you watch this make sure you go watch Cowboy Bebop the anime - series and film (film fits in somewhere just after midway in the series and is mostly a long episode, but very well done).

Well, that's part of the problem, tho: The movie fails to wrap up the most interesting parts of the show and instead delves into the origin of the Reavers (which was unnecessary... the whole "men who stared into the vastness of space and went mad" bit... a sort of reversion to primal nature to avoid coping... all that is undone by an idiotic origin story in the film), and paints a terribly inept tale that amounts to "the government is evil". Hardly seems like the same creative force behind the series, but I suppose everyone has their fails. It's one of those things better left unexplained. Like "the source" in Highlander.

The episode where [MAYBE SPOILERS] she was found doing the fun "dance" with the previous mechanic made me a bit sad even if it made sense why she wanted to be there, if you catch my drift. [END OF MAYBE SPOILERS THOUGH CAPS ARE COOL]

I enjoyed the show for a bit, though I find that I no longer can stand the way that they portray sexuality in it. It's actually a big flaw in modern Sci Fi as a whole, they seem to focus on sex when it really adds nothing to things.

I don't remember the show being that sexy, but maybe I am misremembering. I know the one girl was a pro, but they barely ever focused on that. And the mechanic girl had a one-night stand, but that's pretty fucking common with young girls now-a-days, I kind of think it's funny people even mention it like it's some big thing.

Love never caused anyone to write/do anything, never inspired a classic painting, a brilliant piece of music, timeless photograph, or a film.
Meanwhile don't forget, tune in at 6 for the daily news, where violence is A-ok to show, make sure the kids watch it as well!

This actually might be an issue. I'm watching it with my family. There was the brief sex scene in the pilot, but I kinda thought that would end up being a one time thing. Is there a lot more sex? 'Cause if so it might not end up being appropriate viewing for certain family members.
