http://askakorean.blogspot.com/2010/02/why-is-starcraft-popular-in-korea.html

This blog will tell you why Starcraft is so popular in Korea.

For me, I find professional Starcraft matches to be so entertaining because it's fun to see metagame shift on constant basis. In beginning of SC competition, Terran dominated the whole landscape then Savior arrive and Zerg took over. All of a sudden, Protoss took over and now, Zerg is dominating the scene.

It's just fascinating to see how the gamers are upping each other to the limit.

I only play SC1 for the campaign but I do play SC2 for multiplayer stuff. However, they have yet to iron out the kinks in balance. For example, some people complained that Protoss is bit too overpowering at the moment. I just look at it that metagame need to be shift, which will happen soon.

Honestly, I just like Starcraft 1 game. :D

KavazovAngel: No, it is not abandonware.

Xaromir: Could you please give more information?
Where is this version of Warcraft still sold (new or as download).
It doesn't matter if it's sold or not. The game is not part of the public domain, and someone still holds copyright for the game. I would guess Blizzard.

Saying "it's not sold, therefore is abandonware" has no bearing on copyright law. Sorry, dude!

deshadow52: I played the first few missions for Terran and wow it is pretty amazing I would say the game still looks good and plays very smoothly.

P.S I am a first time player of Starcraft

P.S.S I kinda feel tempted to go back to Wal-mart to Buy Warcraft Battle Chest as I saw it there for the same price and I am more familiar with it's universe by playing wow for about a year and owning some Warcraft books.
Honestly Starcraft is better than those on WC games (and I do like WC, don't get me wrong). It's very polished. Back in the day I got the SC Battlechest on sale for 20 bucks with a 20 dollar instant rebate, yep, got it for free at EB Games.

I'm pretty sure that's the definition of abandonware, not sold anymore. That doesn't mean it's not under copyright in some locations, just that you can't legally get it from the copyright holder or their agent anymore.

Sure, but the way I read Xaromir's post was that he said abandonware = not sold anymore = free and clear to download from whoever.

I'm just pointing out the third part of that equation is in conflict with copyright law.

EDIT: Disclaimer, I certainly liked the term 'abandonware' before I generated a massive backlog of games via GOG. I would be frustrated if I wanted to buy WC1. Maybe ebay?

It's a moral gray area (note, moral, not legal), not for sale by agent or copyright holder? EBay prices ridiculous? If it comes out in a year will you buy a copy? I'm not going to bust your kneecaps if you said "Yes" to all that and went the abandonware route. Note, you could still run afoul of a copyright suit, though I rather doubt it.

Well, I usually hit my weekly quota of "morally gray" by every Monday night, so I try and leave out what I can. Life is just a bit too saturated on a personal and professional level already with "gray".

I'm not sure how your experiences with the community been so far,
but i actually find the work they do important and good in many ways.

Even though it is still copyrighted, if it's not on the market,
the people that own the copyright don't make any money,
therefore nobody gets hurt. Most sites also pull games,
once they learn it's sold again, so far for the mechanics of it.
Even though it basically violates copyright, the copyright holders,
usually don't do much about it, they usually don't care about the title,
or they would have it on sale in one way or another,
or often because they see the value of it.
They don't have to spend a single dime while abandoned ware communities keep the titles alive.
Old games that are out of print are often hard to get,
or expensive, or people often lack the hardware,
but in those communities you find the games, in a form that is easy to handle,
even for newbies and you also find people that will help you,
to get them running. This keeps the games alive, instead of just keeping them in memories.
This is a valuable service, and i guess that's why nobody gets sued.

*sigh* everytime this forum gets talking about games we get talking about piracy, drm and in this case abandonware. I get it such talk comes with the site in question but come on.

look here is how I see it with the Warcraft one situation. If blizzard doesn't want to acknowledge it's existence by selling it in the way GoG does with dosbox games or even giving it away for free with instructions on how to get it to work with dosbox like Bethesda did with TES Arena and Daggerfall then hey you might as well download it and play it through dosbox if you want to. I'm not saying it's abandon ware but when the only way to play it right now is through manually getting it to work through dosbox or going out and buying a old computer and the game (which you would have to be really hardcore to do this btw) then just emulate it cause it's not like Blizzard is going to sell it on their store anytime soon or reach out to people like GoG to do all the work for them so hey; fuck em, Blizzard probably doesn't care that much about it anyway, they are too busy counting money from wow subscriptions and fixing balance issues in wow and starcraft 2 by adding different balance issues thus not fixing the problem at all :D.

so yeah that is my take on the moral issues of playing Warcraft I these days and that is coming to the conclusion that there is none.

You're welcome. I was in a bad mood so I figured passing on a won serial would brighten my day a bit. And it was totally worth it.

Look, I won't lie: seeing the odd arrangement of punctuation and sentence structure, I was really hoping this post was going to rhyme. :-(
Haven't read all the pages on the thread, but make sure you click repeatedly on units to hear some funny lines coming out of them (you'll hear their usual "go,go go!" and stuff for a few times, but if you keep poking them, they change their repertoire). Each unit has diferent responses.
