That'd probably work, at least it'd make sense that it'd work. Not going to test, though. Turned off the cloud already, and I probably won't miss it.

Steam is probably the most successful example of competing with free due to numerous sales, easy purchasing and tons of games
However GOG itself is a good example of competing with free for the simple reason no DRM and easy purchasing makes people want to use their money as they won't be bothered by DRM and get great games

SimonG: Not only GOG, but all the successful players in the industry. Be it GOG, Valve, Netflix or Amazon. All have copied from the concept of piracy and it works.
True. It's not about DRM, it's about ease of use. Steam is simple as hell too - you don't need to browse anything. You click to install, wait a bit, and you have your game ready to go. This is why GOG installers to work "out of package" is important - you launch the installer, wait a bit, and you play. No need to install and search for anything on your own.
I'm a lazy semi-fat fuck - I am so lazy that I don't want to install cracks, copy dvd images or anything. Even if I wanted to pirate games, I'd still prefer buying them on GOG or Steam - because it's more convenient
Also, patches. Pirated games are rarely patched. For me it's essential to play the most updated version of the game that has bugs fixed, new content etc.
Hell, this is why I bought HBO GO. I don't want to wait for fan subtitles, I don't want to download releases. I just wake up in the morning, click PLAY and I watch the newest episode of Boardwalk Empire.
Every service should follow that path.

SimonG: And of course the Giantbomb founder is a fan of copyright violations. Their initial stock of screenshots and game descriptions was copied from Mobygames.
that's not the same i think. mobygames does not hold any copyright over those screenshot. and what's the story behind this anyway? maybe they had permission?

You could argue that the "curative work" by selecting and making the screenshots is creating a copyright on its own. But that is legal question which is also besides the point. and what's the story behind this anyway? maybe they had permission?
Giantbomb just took plenty of Mobys content to start their page. Not limited to screenshot. And from what was happening at the forums on Moby back then, they weren't happy about it.
Others might know more (eg Foxhack), but even from what I've seen back then, I will not visit that site.

kalmis666: I am not going to defend Giantbomb too much because I don't enough of this thing. I do know that majority of the content such information about the games and screenshots is community driven. Meaning anyone can upload pics/game data. Nowadays they got strict rules about plagiarism, but it sounds like maybe this wasn't the case in the beginning. Only discovered them few years later.
Apparently the forum post from back then are gone on Moby. At least I can't access them. From what I remember it was the GB pretty much got all of its starting screenshots and descriptions from Mobygames. People were pretty pissed.
This post from this thread also sum up what I thing about GB:
"Welcome to today's visual generation, where information is preferably acquired through the full multimedia experience rather than just reading. "

Yes, GiantBomb stole most of its initial content from MobyGames.
That's right, stole. Ripped off. When they were found out, they were all "oh we didn't mean to look we're removing all these screenshots and cover art", but they didn't remove the bulk of the data.
I may dislike the decisions made by MobyGames' management, but they sure as hell didn't deserve to have all that stuff ripped off like that.
In conclusion: I can never trust Giant Bomb because they started by stealing information from a much more respectable site.

I don't mind Giant Bomb.
Jeff is a pretty cool guy, though.
Completely agree with what he's saying here.
Plus, he played Galgun.

I get your point but when GB is user-driven and the information is public anyway it's hard to get super pissy. Also the last thing I go to GB for is their game database. In fact, through years of going to their sit I doubt I have ever used it. I go there for gameplay videos with funny commentary. Not even helpful commentary, they all generally suck at games and have vastly different priorities and tastes from me, but I get to see the games in action while they entertain me with nonsense.
