I've also always been quite resistant to the step from Turnbased to something else. I'm an absolute fan of Turnbased games which is why i still love and adore games like Disgaea and Final Fantasy Tactics. Heck even the loss of Turnbased in games like Final Fantasy took getting used to, and certainly the one from Fallout 1/2/tactics to 3 and New Vegas. But it's not always a bad thing in my opinion, and I've come to grips with that after having some actual pleasant experiences with changes in combat style as well.
That and I'm actually quite familiar with and in a way fond of pause based gaming from the infinity engine series, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon age etc. And JA: BIA actually uses it in a different way by letting you time events putting in a bit of tactics into it as well.
Haha. Yeah I didn't own them back then and the friend who I played it at only had UFO Defense and Terror from the Deep xD
Haven't gotten around to it yet since I picked them up on Steam. Played UFO Defense but in TFTD the game started lagging quite a bit in those damned Ship Terror missions. Like they're not enough of a pain as it is xD So I kinda stalled there. So much to play, so little time :D

I must say, I tried the demo of BIA, but I found it utterly unplayable. I was psyched after the tutorial and was consider buying the game, but the mission was just on big PIA (oh, the pun).
I really like the "real-pause time" tactical squad based games. They omit a lot of the exploits you can use on a purely turn based system.
I would love to try a patched demo, but I don't think they will issue one.

Bumping this thread since I noticed the 1.13 patch became available last night. I actually didn't even notice it was patched when I launched it in Steam, then I noticed I could actually train militia now and customize how they defend locations. This game might have been released in a pretty horrible state from what i've read, but since purchasing it on a sale two weeks ago i've had a blast with it and haven't been able to stop playing it. They did a great job patching and adding things people wanted. It might not live up to the originals, but I think after all the patching and tweaking it's definitely worth your time if you enjoy this type of game. I can't wait to start over with the new tactical mode and new difficulty.

When reading all the patch notes, all the little problems with the AI would have probably ruined the game for me at release, i'm still glad I only bought it after a few patches. :D
