Drinking and driving. Not exactly surprising. If I feel sorry for anyone it's the passenger, who seems to be a footnote of the story.

I do agree with you that it's hard to feel too sorry for the driver as he made his decisions. I'm just thankful that no other cars were involved. At least the two deceased had the opportunity to not end up like that.

I'd just like to raise the point that the linked article makes no mention of a cause of the accident - only that it had occurred. The twitter post of a photo of drinking could mean anything and shouldn't be any proof that its a drink driving accident in the least (I mean heck it could be a pic from weeks ago).

Till there is a final verdict you can't say that it is drink driving or anything else .

Regardless, the same applies. It just means the decision to drive in a reckless manner rather than to drink and drive in a reckless manner.

At this point, assuming that was a picture of the same car, it's pretty clear that it wasn't an accident. Somebody was doing something that they really shouldn't have been doing and got killed.

Not that I'm suggesting that you think this was something other than negligence.

I've seen a car in a ... state similar to that once before and that was when somebody I knew died in a motorway crash over 10 years ago.

He was driving at around 180 km/h when he lost control of the car and slammed into an oncoming semitrailer.

There was ... literally nothing left of him, or the car. The driver's area was compressed all the way back to the boot.

So yeah, high speeds were definitely involved. While it's plausible that something big hit him, it'd have to have been a trailer or similar, and it'd be strange if that weren't mentioned in the article at some point. If anything, people are more outraged at truck drivers who drive recklessly than car drivers.

So yeah, pretty sure he's got himself to blame for, well, not making a particularly pretty corpse.

Pretty safe to say he lost control of it at high speeds, slammed on the brakes, but there wasn't enough time to stop.

I like how they said that speed might have been a factor. Of course it was a factor, the question really is if it was the factor which caused the crash, or whether it just eliminated the possibility of coming out of it alive.

I think they are waiting for the autoposy report to see how big a factor booze was.

If you get drunk in the privacy of your home, or,if in public, you take a taxi or have somebody drive you home.that's your business.
Get behind the wheel drunk, it becomes the business of the cops and the courts, and IMHO you deserve what you get.

I recall reading earlier that they said he had 3 beers and 3 "girly shots" over the course of between 4-6 hours, and his friends said he seemed fine to drive home.

The thing is, it is possible to control your alcohol intake over a period of hours to stay under the legal limit. Even if alcohol wasn't a factor at all, Dunn was a thrill seeker, and loved to go fast in cars. He's wrecked NUMEROUS cars in his life, and flipped one before the Porsche. Overall, it's not shocking to see him die from this, but also, the person who was riding with him had to have known what Dunn was like, sober or not.

If he drank that much, then it was a factor. The question is whether or not it was a significant factor. Pretty much any alcohol in your system will affect the central nervous system, it's just that it's not much of a problem until it starts getting up there.

He may have been cool to drive had he not been driving so fast. Reaction times are more and more important the faster you go.

Exactly. Couldn't have said it better. I have zero sympathy for Dunn. I lament his death as I would any other unnecessary death, that's it.

A death is always tragic. In this case there were (at least) two. It is pretty clear that he was drinking before he got into his car. It is very possible that he killed himself, and that he killed the person riding with him.
Tragic, but such is life. You play with fire - you get burnt.

My biggest issue is that he could very well have caused the death of 1+ more persons. What if he - drunk off his tits - had crashed into a car full of a family of five? What if that family had been yours, or that of someone who you know? Drunken drivers are scumbags and they deserve nothing less than the harshest of sentences. Maybe this was a lucky case after all? Could have been far worse.
