Thanks for the giveaway, here is my suggestion.
Movie: Angel-A - very different and unusual story about friendship, love and mutual understanding created by Luc Besson. Really recommend.

Books:
I'm very original, I know :) Start , finish [url=http://www.amazon.de/Die-Dame-vom-See-Roman/dp/3423248173/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1360789035&sr=8-7]here - love story between Geralt and Yennefer is simply magnificent. One of the most powerful series I've ever read.

I would suggest the film "In the mood for love".

This is a special film, not in a usual romantic way, but a story of love, sensuality and the presence of love in every action.
Set in 1962 Hong Kong, Mr Chow and Mrs Chan both live in the same building and both married but they feel lonely. Their respective husband/wife spent long time abroad for their their jobs. This loneliness makes their relationship grow, the way they look each other, the way they walk, they feel the love in every action, but never completing it.
My suggestion is Ted, where a teddy bear comes to life and steals the show! I decided to see the film after reading Roger Ebert's first two sentences in his review: "The funniest movie character so far this year is a stuffed teddy bear. And the best comedy screenplay so far is "Ted," the saga of the bear's friendship with a 35-year-old manchild. I know; this also was hard for me to believe."

It's a very unpredictable predictable romantic comedy that relies on the mystic effects of the 80s pop culture (remember "Flash Gordon"? This film adores it!). It looks like a children's film, but it's not (Rated R for crude and sexual content, pervasive language, and some drug use!); it looks like a romantic film, but it's also like "home alone" on steroids! Hard to believe? The films contains big laughs and even bigger surprises!

Clannad The anime could be a good Choice (though it starts as slice of Life/High school) - but some parts would be depressing especially parts of the second season (Clannad After Story)
5 Centimeters Per Second is the way to go. By far the BEST animated romance film I've ever seen. Hell, one of the top romance movies I've seen. The description as seen in link above: Tohno Takaki and Shinohara Akari, two very close friends and classmates, are torn apart when Akari's family is transferred to another region of Japan due to her family's job. Despite separation, they continue to keep in touch through mail. When Takaki finds out that his family is also moving, he decides to meet with Akari one last time.

As years pass by, they continue down their own paths, their distance slowly growing wider and their contact with one another fades. Yet, they keep remembering one another and the times they have shared together, wondering if they will have the chance to meet once again.

The description may sound a bit dull and generic, but trust me, it tugs so hard at your heart strings. I was seriously tearing up by the ending of the film. The music, atmosphere, dialog and VISUALS. Oh man, those gorgeous, beautiful visuals. It's literally like looking at a moving painting. Every aspect of the film is carefully, and lovingly drawn and crafted into one of the most pleasantly colorful and soothing films you will ever see.

The story is so wonderfully paced and the entire movie is essentially divided into 3 chapters. Their relationship is distant, yet incredibly close, as they find ways to be with each other. The main point of this movie: life goes on, some things may not go how you want it to, and it hurts unbearably. Something that hit pretty hard for me, personally.

I saw the subbed version, so if you don't mind reading subtitles, it's fine. Here's a brief look at the film. Highly recommended to watch in at least DVD quality.

Much thanks to everyone who came up with a suggestion. I have a favourite so far, but I will definitely check out more of them eventually.

Lots of movies have been mentioned, many of which I have already seen and liked. 'In the Mood for Love' and 'Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans' especially are two of my favourite films ever. The guys who recommended them may come up with a new suggestion, if they so want. Also, feel free to offer more suggestions from the other fields of visual art and of poetry.

Anyway, I'm gonna announce the winner in about 14 hours.

I recommend almost anything by PG Wodehouse. Many (though not all) of his stories revolve around various love triangles and entanglements, with a comedy-of-manners type vibe. A good one to start off would be "The Mating Season". His stuff is hysterically funny (not slapstick, it's just VERY witty, the wittiest writer I've ever come across, full stop), but it still has that warm fuzzy romantic vibe.

You should also try to see "The Importance of Being Earnest" at some point. I got to see it on Broadway while I was in NYC and it was amazing.

As far as movies, one sprang to mind immediately: Happy Accidents. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's just absolutely perfect. It's a beautiful love story that mixes in elements of philosophy and time travel while managing to remain very "grounded". I guess it would fall under the "romantic comedy" category but it's so unique that that label doesn't feel right (and normally I hate romcoms). It's just fantastic. If you like Marisa Tomei even slightly you gotta check this one out.

Oh ya and you've probably already seen it but, Donnie Darko is incredible as well ;). One of the "purest" love stories ever IMO. (the movie is much more than that, but it's still a central part of the story)

EDIT: Also, if you don't mind loads of dialogue, check out the BBC miniseries "Pride and Prejudice" (it's like 10 hours long I think). Classic love story, with great acting and writing. (this is the miniseries, not the more recent movie)

The BBC have put out a lot of great stuff over the years, check out "Our Mutual Friend" miniseries as well if you're into that kind of stuff.

Lastly (I keep adding stuff hah), Shakespeare, E.E Cummings, and John Donne all wrote amazing love poetry.

Have you ever tried fan-made NPC mods for Baldur's Gate 1+2?

There are plenty of NPC mods to choose from and many/most of them also include a romance path. Admittedly I've played as a female character so all I have experience from are the straight male romances, but I hear there are several really good romanceable characters for males as well. I'm generally really not into romance at all, but the romanceable NPCs have been a guilty pleasure of mine. Some of these fan writers are as good as professionals (I would claim some of them are heaps better than the average game writer) and they have had time to create much more complex and deep characters than any original character could ever be. There's really something for everybody: sweet and angsty, realistic and funny. Some really steam your glasses. Some make you laugh. You'll be surprised how good they can be, and how much they can spice up the base games! Check out the Baldur's Gate forums for links to mod sites to get started.
Does Fifty Shades of Grey count?
I am glad In the Mood for Love has been mentioned several times. It's one of my favorite movies too... What an elegant and memorable film.

I love romantic stories, but I enjoy especially those stories that show the contradictions and paradoxes of love, its most human side. One of my favorite novels is Norwegian Wood, narrated by a man who remembers his youth, when he was searching for himself and was in love with a very troubled young woman. One of my favorite films (it was my favorite film during many years, but I haven't watched in a long time and I don't know what I would think now) is Jules and Jim, by Truffaut, in which a woman is in love with two men who are great friends. There is only one film that has made me cry every single time I have seen it: Spartacus. Like all great love stories, Spartacus is more than a love story: it's a story of slaves fighting for freedom, of the corruption of power, of redemption, of hope. But it's also a love story, and that ending, in which Spartacus's wife introduces him to his son, always gets to me, and it's one of the most memorable and moving moments I have experienced in a movie theatre, maybe of my whole life. I also love the poetry of Luis Cernuda o e.e. cummings.

But my pick is going to be rather unusual. I am going to recommend The Sixth Sense. The Sixth Sense is a horror movie only the first time you see it; the second one, it becomes a love story. What strikes me about this film is how powerfully depicts the love the characters feel (the mother and her son, the detective and his wife) and, at the same time, how powerfully depicts their loneliness: for several reasons, they are utterly unable to help each other, and they live in their completely isolated worlds until the very end, when the conflict reaches its end. It's a feat I don't remember having seen in other movies: showing the power of love and, at the same time, our inevitable solitude.
Lovely BUMP :D
Sorrows of young Werher by Goethe. It's so edgy, you gonna cry a lot...well, if you are really into love stories...

Luned: Wishbone beat me to the post on Much Ado About Nothing, so I will go with Jane Austen's Persuasion. Ang Lee did an absolutely first-rate film version (). Every single performance is just perfect.

Yumi: Ang Lee directed [url=http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114388/]Sense and Sensibility with emma thompson, kate winslet & hugh grant, not Persuasion. So not sure if you mixed them up? However, I absolutely *ADORE* the linked version of Persuasion. IMO the best Jane Austen adaptation ever made. Its subtleness is perfection (and ciaran hinds is perfection too :)) The 2007 version was horrible though.
You're right, it's Roger Michell directing, not Ang Lee, but you're also right that it's one of the best adaptations ever. Persuasion has the advantage of being a short enough book to successfully turn into a single movie without chopping anything, and it's the most mature and reflective of all her works.
Soooo that's it. Thanks for all the suggestions, I feel like I'm gonna check out a lot of them once I can find the time. Feel a bit bad for choosing only one winner, but I just don't have the money to give games to all of you guys who came up with suggestions.

Anyway, mondo84 is the winner. Congratulations!
Congrats mondo84 and thanks for this giveaway Ivory&Gold.
