Robocop is a great movie. Even though it has a lot of 80s clichés (typical 80s thugs; corporate evil bastards), it doesn't feel cheap. Murphy's struggle to regain his humanity is absolute classic. The movie still holds by today's standards.


In regards to the BACK TO THE FUTURE trilogy, all the movies are great, but watch them in order, otherwise you won't understand crap of what's going on.

So did you ever watch Robocop?

No. The Criterion Collection seems not to be in anamorphic widescreen, the 20th edition is all funky, and the Blu Ray seems to have gotten the criminal treatment that Predator got.

Why the fuck cannot I not just get a good theatrical release of this movie? What the hell.

I would say Netflix but it sounds like you want a little more quality than that.

Just out of curiousity, whats wrong with the Bluray release of Robocop? AFAIK the picture is bad for a Bluray in absolute terms but still equal or better then all other version of th movie?

If they straight up just did a High Definition release of the negatives, I'd have no problem with that.

It's when they go and screw around with the film grain and noise that it starts getting really bad. Film grain is an unavoidable thing when dealing with film. The only thing that makes it look fantastic is to have a fantastic quality of film, but even then film grain is still there. Look at the Blu Ray releases of Psycho, Young Frankenstein, Yojimbo, The Alien Anthology, or any of the heavily praised releases to see that they left the quality of the movie alone while giving it a high definition release from the negatives. When you go in and start cleaning up the film grain and stuff, it destroys the quality of the film; then you're stuck in a loop of trying to fix your mistakes, and it just comes out looking so atrocious. In the world of bad Blu Ray examples, nothing holds a candle to Pedator. And apparently it's what they tried to do with Robocop.

I havent seen a single Bluray you mentioned, but I own 28 Days later (which was shot on DV cam and then upscaled horribly), so I might have a different understanding of bad Bluray - in that it looks worse worse than the DVD with a good upscaling player.

Now, whatever they did/dint do with Robocop (which apparently you cant judge yourself since you havent seen it) its a matter of how it stacks up to the DVD releases. if you were content with buying a DVD release, then you might get better quality than that even with a digitally (over-)processed bad transfer. At which point I dont understand your behavior.

Sure, it might not hold up with new films or carefully remastered old ones, but if its still the best available then its a good buy... unless you want to show of your home video system at the same time.

edit: and Robocop is a movie you definitely should see

Total Recall is also a great Verhoeven´s movie. But Hollow Man... Blegh.
