Does anyone actually know anyone personally who thought the world was going to end today? I'm getting the impression that this was one or two people given a platform by the media.

It was mistranslation of ancient text/scripture. Happens all of the time. 99% of doomsday predictions come from sloppy misguided interpritation (spell), be it misreading the bible, Mayan astronomy, or Beatles songs.
