When I first saw the KS project I was a bit excited, as the Ultima series (even IX) was a huge favourite of mine... The first real letdown was when Ultima X was announced as a MMO and then cancelled. I assumed Richard Garriott, who had left the company at the time, was not to blame, but when I read about "Shroud of the Avatar" I'm not so sure.

MMO, micro transactions (even if "the game can be played single player without a dime spent" it will just mean you're cut off from content), arrogant attitude to people who've pledged etc.... I'll retract my pledge, and judge the final product. The goodwill is gone, and the whole project just comes off as a money grabbing exercise.

Well, therically it's not an MMO since the game isn't run on a server. If the interviews are right, there are simple periodic updates to the world and the possibility to invite other players in PvP. In other words, something akin to Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.

The micro transactions part is still a bit fuzzy. We're not sure HOW it's handled or WHAT is micro transacted. The has been a livestream (you can see it in the second update), but I haven't had the time to watch it yet.
This is certainly exciting news. Added to my watch list on Gamespot so I can monitor news from there.

Too many kickstarters for this poor old man though: Torment, Wasteland 2, Project Eternity and now Shroud of the Avatar and of course, Grimoire. Lots of amazing RPG goodness on the way hopefully if all goes well with these.
I don't know, as much as I like the Ultima series I am yet not exactly very "enthusiast" about this new project... the fact that a DRM-free version is not yet (if ever) announced and that the "offline" portion of it is not very clearly defined doesn't help at all...

hunh? It's not ever going to be DRM free since it is an Online game .... your statement makes no sense at all because your basically saying "I'm gonna wait because they haven't clearly explained this whale's rock climbing skills."

the concept is that the towns and world map are mmo based, but the missions / field areas are instance based. the game runs off a server that you have to log into but instead of being thrown into an open world with everyone else running around at the same time as you it will be sort of guild wars based with MMO-like social hubs mixed with instanced personal zones when you (or your party) walk out of town.

Remember that RG 's reign as president of NCsoft's NA division -WAS- during the development and publishing of the first Guild Wars games ... it's not all that unprecedented that this game should play something like Ultima Online mixed with Guild Wars.
Lord British makes a new type of game-sandbox MMO gameplay that can be played single-player- and yet people still want another CRPG...As much as I love that genre there is hundreds of them already and kickstarter itself is saturated with them so I'm glad Lord British is coming up with something original.

As for his wealth, he first wants to see if people are even interested in their game and isn't he selling his mansion. No offence to the other kickstarters but it isn't like Osbidian is struggling for meals after realeasing New Vegas.

One thing I want to know is if you can make a private server or whatever? It'd be good to play the best parts of a sandbox MMO without other assholes ruining (unless it's your friends then it's fun :P).

Crosmando: Absolutely disgusting, I hope every one who pledges to this crappy disguised-MMO feels ashamed. Giving money to a guy who paid 30,000,000 to go into space, and also got 32,000,000 from suing a company, and who lives in a mansion, is ridiculous in the extreme.

This is the kind of project that is a stain of Kickstarter, it's a completely commercial-minded project, absolutely 100% mainstream and no different than any other MMO currently in the market that would have no trouble getting funding from a publisher.

The kind of morons and casuals who would donate to a project like this blows the mind. Seriously, get back to World of Warcraft.
World of Warcraft is a theme park MMO and this one looks like a sandbox MMO. Completely different. Play Wurm Online to see what they're like, maybe you might actually enjoy it! :P

I had enough of Single Player CRPG kickstarters since Shaker: An Old School RPG, we have more then enough right now. At least stop at Torment :P

At least its not another WOW clone thank goodness.

yes, shame .... shame the fuck on me, so much shame I don't think I will be able to live another minute unless I relieve some of my shame by punching myself in the nuts, shame, shame, shame. shame, shame, shame, shame. shame, shame, shame, shame. shame, shame, shame, shame. shame, shame, shame, shame. shame, shame, shame, shame. shame, shame, shame, shame. shame, shame, shame, shame. shame, shame, shame, shame. shame, shame, shame, shame. shame, shame, shame, shame. shame.

you mean you haven't figured out that this guy is retarded and responding is a waste of effort?

well, yeah, I respond too .... but that's because it's fun to be a dick and spew sarcasm at dumb people in the hopes of aggravating them.

Well, I'd love another CRPG, and I don't think there are that many out there that have the quality of the Ultima series.

There are tons of MMO games, and don't fancy any of them (though I'm a bit intrigued by the Elder Scrolls Online). What I want is a good SP experience (or perhaps MP with just 2-4 players, playing the same story as the SP), and I don't get the feeling that is what I'll get from this KS project.

I hate micro transactions as well. The business model I prefer is the way Bethesda is currently going (including their co-operation with Obsidian).

It might be that this project will turn out fine, but I'll sit on the fence until the final game has been released (which will make this the only KS RPG-project >50K that I'm not pledging for).
Update:

"Iolo" and "Lord British" talks about the game

There's plenty of MMOs but not much sandbox MMOs or MMOs that can be experienced single-player, you get what I mean now?

This was very cool. Very smart, Lord British. I wonder how much he actually charges for his replica X-bows? Funding @ 585,634
Over 600K now. Yep, seems LB's getting his wish after all.
