anyone have any good isometric style turn based squad shooters (like commandos( edit:i know its not turn based haha) or fallout) or isometric point and click puzzle games ( like sanitarium). remember playing a few when i was young probably on a demo, cant remember the name for the life of me but id love to give some games like that a go again

Commandos is not turn-based, but if you are looking for something similar to it, I would recommend and [url=http://www.gog.com/game/desperados_2]Desperados 2.

In addition, the Jagged Alliance series consists of top-down/isometric turn-based squad shooters.

Commandos isn't really TBS but if you like Commandos try Desperados or Legend of Sherwood.

I recommend Shadow Watch, made in 2000 by the same guys that made Rainbow Six (Redstorm Entertainment).
Beautiful tactical game where action points and skill points actually matter. It's also non linear in the way your campaign plays out, you often have multiple options for your next mission so you can choose whether to go on a loud & aggressive raid mission or do something more stealthy and that will decide which characters you're bringing along as well. Each of your characters has very specific skills so you must use your team in a specific way, like the tools of a Swiss Army knife.
The graphics are hand drawn in a unique comic book style and the music is awesome as well (by Bill Brown), check it out here:

PS: My original CD-ROM version doesn't work in Win 7 anymore. I got it running kind of ok a little while ago with only minor issues (choppy scrolling) but now it doesn't boot up anymore, just as a little warning for anyone planning to pick up a used copy online and running it on a regular Win7 installation without any funny tricks.

jagged alliance and desperados do loo good. think i might have to give a couple of them a try.
shadow watch's graphics dont look too appealing to me but if anyone could recommend anything else like this that has a kind of random level thing (maybe like a skirmish mode on a c&c game?) if thats not too far fetched

Have a look at the original UFO games (UFO - Enemy Unknown, X-Com - Terror from the Deep and X-Com Apocalypse). They have an overarching strategy part (research, building bases) but the most time you spend in a turn based isometric environment on randomly generated maps hunting down aliens with your squad (or vice versa :-))

If you're looking for really old, classic turn-based games of this kind, you'll be wanting Laser Squad and Lords of Chaos. And of course the inheritors of the Laser Squad lineage, the XCOM series.

Great recommendations, although Incubation is not about free-roaming - many levels are more like puzzles (find the right approach) with a bit of trial and error. The Wilderness Mission are of hefty difficulty, but the main game should be manageable with a little patience.

And yes, it's intense. A turn based game that actually can make you sweat.

I should also mention the rather fabulous and [url=http://www.mobygames.com/game/shadoworlds]Shadoworlds games. Worth hunting down (especially Shadowlands), and I'd love to see them make it to GOG eventually.

Had this on the Amiga, but couldn't get warm with it.

surprisingly id only heard of the most recent xcom games. might have to check them out, aside from like omerta its been ages since ive played a game like this probably since i was like below the age of 10

Both on the Amiga for me, found Shadowlands quite addictive.

If you don't mind fiddling, Cyberstorm is the best top-down TBS I've played. It's finicky on Win7 though.

Maybe I wasn't patient enoush at the time. I was more into Dungeon Master (though I never beat it - I kept starting from the beginning to "do even better" :-)). Also I played a lot of Action games (Turrican, X-Out, Apidya).

Do you know Perihelion? Great RPG with a great story and awesome Soundtrack, if a little easy and short.

Btw.: Wasn't it rare in the US to have an Amiga? I thought the Amiga's success was more in Europe, while America dug the (S)NES & co and later the PC.
