anjohl: It's the latter, and I hate it. I have been with GOG for a long time, for better or for worse, and I daresay I have purchased more titles than the average user, and yet I am forced to use Twitter if I want access to the best deals from GOG? I understand they want to encourage new users, but it feels cheap to force existing customers to help them "Trend" in return for the good sale price.

orcishgamer: Exactly what deal did you not get unless you used Twitter/Facebook? I'm not aware of anything you miss out on other than contests and maybe some announcements.
They have had several sales on that were only announced on Twithead, not via email as normal.

Don't those come across the front page?
And the RSS feed, too.

I use Twitter as a sort of mini-RSS feed anyway, with some friends posting stuff mixed in between.
I don't use twitter, I don't have facebook steam or even a cell phone.

I'm a pariah.

orcishgamer: I just can't follow what's going on, the interface enrages me. I know people use tweetdeck and crap, but if I need a third party tool to make sense of your service, perhaps your service blows.
Every now and then I still don't get or understand Twitter too :-D But as I said I have grown to tolerate it. I use microblog-purple with Pidgin for Twitter, but I have been using Pidgin for years now and so it was just a matter of installing plug-in instead of a brand new third party tool.

orcishgamer: Not using Twitter will make it hard to enter most of their giveaways, but that doesn't mean much to me, I don't use Twitter and the chance to win a game wouldn't change it.

I actually have tried to make some limited use of Twitter a few times and I just got pissed off at the whole platform. I hate MyFace with a passion (both of them) so would never use it,.
Pretty much this for me as well. I used Twitter in the past to keep in touch with a couple friends, but we actually found e-mail is orders of magnitude better.

Facebook... I made an account a while ago, but I don't use. Don't like.

I haven't felt I'm missing out on anything on GOG by not using those social services.
Nah, it's not necessary. And welcome to GOG. :)

If you are on the web page that day, sure. The whole point of the email notification is that I always check my email daily, i shouldn't have to check other sites as well, particularly when those sites email me about other offers. The sole reason they force you to use Twitter is for trending hits, IE, to attract new customers. typical business move, frustrating loyal customers to entice new ones.
Yes. Make one nao!

Have you tried subscribing to GOG's RSS feed? It works now.

Dunno, with bookmarks I don't have much of an issue opening up and flipping through a bunch of sites really quickly. If there was a service to turn a Twitter feed into RSS that would be the best.
I used to hate Twitter, now I'm happily an addict. What I didn't understand and what many don't is it can be for whatever you want, not just banal "I'm doing this crap that nobody cares about" posts. If you follow a bunch of people with a similar mentality, it becomes very interesting and addictive. I don't visit most websites unless they use Twitter anymore...it's great as a news service.

More on topic, no, it's not essential for GOG by any means, but it sure is fun to interact with GOG and other users that way in addition to the forums, and also to spread the word.

Not really. Biggest problem with Twitter is that you cannot directly message someone, and they limit the room you can use.

Ideally, Twits would be better than Crackbook, since it's the essence of Crackbok distilled to a small package, but in practice, Twits tries too hard to be different, and thus you are better off just using FB and ignoring everything but the news feed.

You can directly message someone, you just both have to be following each other. I prefer it that way. There are tons and tons of ways around the character limit, and you can also link your account to blogs or other websites if you have more to say or show. This can be set to automatically tweet when you make a new post or whatever, for example. Think of it as a starting point as well as a place to share brief thoughts.

The problem wiht Twits is that if I want to communicate with someone, I have no way of letting them know, so it's not a closed enviroment, I have to tell them to add me to twits some other way.

Facebook offers *everything* twits does, AND more, plus you can configure facebook to function exactly like twits, ergo twits is obsolete.
