orcishgamer: Dark Colony was the example I would have used as well, it was even accused in those specific words, "Starcraft Clone".

Licurg: No, that's a link for Dark Planet, not Dark Colony. They're 2 separate games :)
My bad, didn't look too close, just saw Dark in the link. Yeah, so toss Dark Colony on the pyre as well, I guess.

AFnord: Armies of Exigo borrows heavily from Starcraft, in terms of mechanics. It is a good game though, and while it might not have the tight balance of StarCraft, it does add a few new gameplay elements.
No, no, no. What a dumb game. I hate it so much. I played it short after Warcraft III and it felt so much cloned it hurt me. And those stupid heroes still give me nightmares. "Fight, my hero." "OK, you are mildly injured, rather pull back, my main hero." "OK, you are seriously wounded, you really should retreat, my hero, who isn't allowed die." "Great you finally disengaged, after 20 orders, my stupid hero." "What are you doing?! Why are you running into battle again my almost dead hero?" "Rest in peace, you idiot." Mission lost.
Starcraft was a clone of Warcraft, so the accepted term for these type of games is "Warcraft clone" and there are a shit load of them.
This game is pretty damned close to a clone.

Elmofongo: The are 100s of wow clones, a good number of diablo clones, but I have never seen a single starcraft clone at all.
They're called "Real-Time Strategies". The first two are called MMORPGs and ARPGs.

I remember reading an interview where some guy was, among other things, upset that "we're still living in the era of Doom-clones"; in other words - people seem unable to cope with such high concepts as "themes", "genres", "settings", etc. and simply find the closest thing they can think of and call it a rip-off of that.
Thought experiment: count the number of times the term "Minecraft-clone" pops up when discussing any game containing voxels.

Kind of funny when Minecraft is a 'clone' of another game.

i already know the genres i am saying a game that plays almost or exactly like starcraft trust i can tell the difference between a game like starcraft and a game like civilization
I don't understand fully this thread. Isn't Starcraft a Warcraft II in space? Aren't all this games clones of Dune II? Or do you mean games with two resources? Take CnC then. Really CnC: RA2 looks strikingly similar to SC1.

Lets take another example, you could argue thou, that there aren't say any Pokémon clones, but it is an RPG, where you get characters and train them. Its just that in Pokémon you party is not persistent, still it fits in the RPG genre. There just aren't many (as I have heard of one or two) RPG games that play the same way Pokémon does. And you can't argue that Pokémon isn't succesful enough like to have clones of it.

Also Civilization is not an RTS.

The thing is that both, CnC and AOE were released before SC, in any way SC should be the clone.

Well - what ARE you looking for ? The game most similar to Starcraft ? Starcraft: Brood War.
Outside of the franchise ? You can dissect every RTS out there, analyze the underlying premises and try to place them on some scale of importance multiplied by similitude...
What's the point ? The question you're asking is loaded and forces a mindset I don't really find illuminating.

Cabzx: Warcraft 2
This is not Warcraft in space ! ;)
