Probably because of console exclusives? My point is about multi-platform design, not single-platform design.
I really shouldn't have mentioned the S word.

yes, damn those PC exclusive games.

Go back to my post and try some of the highlights. Definitely try the one with no-cd fix becase then you can make a comparison between identical games, the only difference being Steam as a running background application. :)

Crosmando: Pics or GTFO. HoMM3's interface is completely designed for mouse, I cannot imagine trying to navigate it's UI with a rebinded controller to be anything but an exercise in masochism.
What? You want picture of me holding a controller in front of a TV where upscaled HOMM III is running? :D Of course it's doable, and it's fairly comfortable as well. A bit slower, but with some shortcuts binded around the controller it's perfectly playable.

and i forgot to add - while not being demeaning, you are questioning the intelligence of those people who do not like the same thing you like....

amok: so "Consoltards" is not demeaning? In another thread you talk about "PC super race" (I think it was)... not sure what you are calling this, but I call it demeaning. And there are many other of yours in different threads. it is a trend which is getting annoying, this was the last drop.

(apologies if I came off too harsh, but it has been very annoying)

Crosmando: "I think it's a reasonable position, I reserve the right to question the intelligence of anyone who is a console gamer (...)"

I do not respect anyone who would willing support an industry which has damaged gaming so much. As I said I'm in favor of the separation of PC and console gaming, something like what existed in the 90's before the first Xbox.
Man, besides I´m personally PC gaming pro-view, no, it´s not a reasonable position and you don´t deserve the "right" to question that. Simply put, do you understand the meaning and importance of respect?
You take your position of no-respect. If I behavior like you, I should screw you over. But I give you the minimun respect.

Just for laughs, I tried to build a JoyToKey profile for Homm3; it actually works quite well.

The game as a keyboard shortcut for almost everything, and uses cursor keys and the default ESC/ENTER combo in many dialogs in a consistent way.
Left stick for mouse emulation, right stick for moving the map around, d-pad for cursor keys and various shortcut on the remaining buttons... better than I expected

kazmar: I've been playing torchlight on steam over the last couple of days and it keeps overheating my laptop, which doesn't happen with my gog games. Steam also now seems more bloated than when I first got it, does anyone have an idea of what kind of processor (and graphics with the overlay) overhead steam is adding to playing games these days, as it's just getting stupid.

Its why I'm holding off getting torchlight 2 till it arrives on gog, and I wish I had grabbed the 1st one when it was on sale.

Oh well I guess I should install sacrifice...
Steam uses up a lot of memory but that is it. If you computer is overheating then I don't think it is Steam's fault or Torchlight's fault. It has to be dust in your laptop or something else.

JMich: 1024x768 or 1280x1024. Mostly teaching code and debugging, and also presentations. Having a viewing distance of over 5 meters also helps quite a bit.
But yes, I was working with that as a screen, instead of the 15" monitors that were available at that time, or 17" if you were one of the lucky ones.
The biggest complain I had was that I didn't have access to a wireless keyboard to be able to walk around while demonstrating.

Crosmando: You teach a programming language?
And what I meant was playing games and internet browsing, your use seems to be somewhat unorthodox from the average user.
Sorry for late reply, telephone troubles and had to do a bit of troubleshooting/repairs.
Helped teach during University, mostly programming techniques and examples in Fortran 77 (Ugh...). Though that meant access to the Amphiteater with the projector, so I did have the experience of playing Starcraft and Unreal Tournament on a huge ass screen. Really reallly fun. As for internet browsing, it also works quite well, assuming of course you sit at a proper distance, and not be 5 feet away from a 72" image.
As to the use being unorthodox, I just (ab)use whatever's at hand. Hell, I have even played JA2:UC using the projector at my place, was a lovely experience. So yes, a big screen is a good thing to have, assuming you have the space to use it. A 30" screen at 2 feet is just stupid, no matter what you use it for (unless it's art restoration. In that case it might be small).

That's what I'm coming to the conclusion of... I've just stripped the laptop down and rebuilt it and it seems slightly happier, it looks like it's just being worn down after years of use, sadly this seems to have the symptom of steam and torchlight killing it. I'll have to do a proper rebuild when it's not my mission critical machine.

Oh to have a top end gaming rig again

And as I don't like being negative about things, (even Macs :P) and it wasn't my aim to attack steam, (I do like the service hence it's annoying when it doesn't play) and also for putting flame bait out there...

But hey at least it shows that you guys are actually helpful and I will use the tips to try and get torchlight running better, imagine if I had posted this on the steam forums ;)

Lightweight anvil.
Thanks, that was a good (and well needed) laugh :-)
avatar
amok: well, my Steam client is more lightweight today than it was a couple of years ago. It takes less space and uses less CPU. Not sure which Steam client you are using?
avatar
Crosmando: Bloated meaning the amount of features they have crammed into the same old years-old client design.
More features != bloat. Agree on the design, though, it could use some work.

Try this, to give it a fresh look:
