OmegaX: It doesn't. I was just disproving your false statement that only here people are fanboyish about their preferred digital distribution platform. I don't even see anything wrong about this particular topic because the word "attacking" in the title is between quotes so it shouldn't be taken literally.

sorry, Sherlock.
Coming from you I was more willing to believe that you were serious. Sorry, but it's as if it was your job defending Steam on every thread it is mentioned.

yeah, sorry. i forgot: in this forum you're only allowed to defend GOG, and you absolutely must detest Steam...

consider it my attempt at re-establishing cosmic balance ;)

Personally, I'm getting tired of either side defending anything. This thread was supposed to be an honest question if maybe GOG was becoming important enough to be on "Steam's radar". At least, that's what I got from the OP but apparently you saw something else.
It isn't too far-fetched to think that maybe Valve is asking for midweek and weekend deals for indie games that coincide with GOG releases. After all, Valve has a very strong position with the indie scene and they can easily convince devs to put their games on sale whenever they want. Amazon did something similar during the Winter sales and I believe it got them very good results, they even one-upped Steam with earlier sales on popular titles. That's definitely an "attack" in the sense that they are aiming to earn their share of the digital distribution market by taking customers from the market leader. Hell, during the entire month of January I only bought games from Amazon because of all the coupons I got on Christmas and left all my Steam coupons to expire unused.

OmegaX: I've seen threads there about how Gabe is god's gift to man, how somebody became sexually aroused when the Steam client had an update, and how another person wished Steam was his girlfriend.
Well, maybe Sigmund Freud could have explained that. Or Theodore Millon. Or perhaps Charles Darwin.

Fred_DM: Switzerland is Southern Germany, and as Southern Germans we share our Northern brethren's lack of a sense of humor.
I can't help but remembering the Euro 2008 and the very subtle subtitle of the Germany vs Austria match...
Considering GOG has just announced that they're matching Steam's offer on American Nightmare pre-orders (i.e. 10% off for all, 25% off if you have Alan Wake on the service in question) then I'd say that it's just competition (or a promo orchestrated by Remedy).

Although I'd be the first one to welcome you as my countryman (who cares about that small pond which seperates us?), I believe you'll first have to allow minarets again, before we could fuse our countries...

We Germans are sensitive about such topics. :D

As others have said this is competition. But I think it is a conscious strategy for Steam. Selling new games DRM-free makes gog a much better option for a big sector of the gaming market that despises DRM, even if PC gamers have come to accept Steams DRM as a more benign version compared to the alternatives.

I have Steam, but I only use it to buy games at an extreme discount because its the only way I am accepting DRM. I NEVER buy a new game on Steam, I buy a physical copy if it doesn't have DRM, if it does then I'll wait. But if it's on an extreme sale on Steam I might get it. I'm sure there are others like me who buy games on Steam only on sale, so a way to compete with the DRM-free versions is to provide super cheap ones.

Me personally, if a game I want is available on gog I get it here no matter if it's a few bucks cheaper elsewhere. This will become easier if the catalogue of newer games increases.

Nice_Boat: Alan Wake - 13,99€ (Standard) 15,99€ (Collectors edition, same goodies as GOG version, but with OST) VS 15$, 11.52€ on GOG
I'm betting the discount has more to do with today's American Nightmare announcement & pre order than GOG. That said, GOG are competing on Steam's turf now and if Steam wants, GOG will feel it.

Roman5: It's just regular, standard competition, which is good for Us, the Gamers

if GOG wants to play with the Big Boys, it's going to have to Step it up

Pheace: It's GOG's move it seems

Alan Wake Nightmare preorder:

Steam - $15 (-10%) = $13.49, -15% more if you already own Alan Wake
GOG - $19.99 (-10%) = $17.99, -15% if you already own Alan Wake

Let's see how well competition works ^^
It's cheaper in the UK buying both on GoG. £16.23

Steam: £20.48

It's steam's move, for Brits.

Onto attacking GoG. Nonsense, devs and pubs agree weeks in advance what goes on sale and when on steam. Reports of this has been surfacing from the start of it's inception.

It's nothing buy coincidence. Steam does not have the power to suddenly put games on sale with the drop of the hat. Well, apart from it's own games.

Here in Spain it's also cheaper the GOG version.

GOG: 26.32$ (20.25€ aprox.)
Steam: 26,48€ (28.73$ on Steam USA, 22.11€ aprox.)

6-7€ less!! (yeah, only 6-7€ less, but, why should I give more for almost the same?)

The GOG version does not have the OST, but for me its ok.

PS:
If you wan't to compare it, look at this page

Maybe this is more of a publisher thing were they say "look, Mr. Digital Distributor(s), sequel's coming up so today I want a discount of about this price! And let's throw some sequel discount too so that we can say it opened up with a bazillion sales!"

Or maybe VALVE is angry at GOG for the "DRM Knight" ad and for saying STEAM's uber sales are wrong!1!!! And they HAZ DLECARRD WAR!!11111
