I went to the place where I rent games and I was renting Resident Evil 6 (it's quick time event hell) and I saw Silent Hill Downpour.

Now coming from playing Silent Hill 1,2, and 3 I wondered is Downpour any good?
I know that Silent Hill has mostly been shit after 4 (worst was Homecoming) but Downpour seems to look better.

So Yay or Nay?
Well, I only seen Downpour on Let's play videos (many of them), but I may say, from what I've seen, it's on the quality of Homecoming. Below the average (for the franchise), I'd say.

I went to see lets play aswell and imo it does have the Silent Hill mood.

That scene where Murphy killed a fat guy in the prison showers was disturbing. And I like that heavy rain for atmosphere it fits the town of silent hill the same as the dense fog imo.
Curious about this one and homecoming as well.. It's on my steam wishlist for a while. :/
I haven't played Downpour, but I do want to get it sometime. Just gotta wait for it to drop in price or go on sale somewhere. Also, I'd really prefer if they bothered to make a PC port of it, but I'll probably end up getting it for PS3.

It looks interesting enough, seems to have an appropriate mood about it, I've heard the soundtrack is really good, but that the combat wasn't really well done.
yay
Story is not that good and I didnt like the enemies but it has some nice ideas. Do the sidequests - they are best part of the game.
I followed neogaf thread on Downpour and most people were surprised at how good it was - the general consensus was best SH game since SH3. It has a great OST as well. Too bad it never came out on PC, I don't want to play it on console.

They probably say it because Silent Hill 4 got bad opinions from fanboys back then and it sticked to it :-(

Same goes for HoMM4 - very good game, but most of the game noobs would say "oh, this sucks!", just because they've heard it sucks.

Silent Hill 4 was the most scary game of them all for me. They knew what buttons to push to scare me.
I've been playing through Downpour for the past couple of weeks. You should know that I came into the Silent Hill community pretty late (around Origins) and I have only recently retroactively played though the original three games (I still haven't gotten around to The Room). And frankly, I think that more recent titles in the franchise are better than those ones. I've enjoyed Shattered Memories more than any other title in the series and Downpour is a close second for me.

If you are familiar with the Wii title, Downpour takes many elements from it and adapts them to suit the new character. In Shattered Memories, Silent Hill was blanketed in snow and it would freeze over when you entered the other world. Downpour uses rain to sort of the same effect, making it dangerous to be outside during a rain storm. Also taken from the previous game is the chase sequences, although you won't be running from fleshlings, they've been replaced with an ominous dark presence that seemingly wants to consume your character but they more or less play the same.

What's changed is that combat and exploration makes a return to the series. Combat is made more difficuly by having only one melee weapon at a time and they're only good for several enemies before breaking apart. The protagonist isn't as competent a fighter as the character from Homecomings and this helps make enemy encounters feel more dangerous. Fighting off one or two enemies is usually easy enough but when they have larger numbers (usually during a rain storm) it's more advisable to simply run away. Also, the game is probably the least linear one since the original titles, you'll have to do some honest exploring to find things and the addition of side quests is definately welcome.

The game suffers from some technical issues like texture pop-in but most jarring is the framerate hiccups. No deal breakers but it does manage to give the game an unpolished feeling. A patch has finally been dated for both PS3 & 360 (right as I'm reaching the end of the game no less) so don't let that put you off. Downpour is definately a return to form for the series and it's played closer to a traditional survival horror game than anything else this generation. Honestly, I can't recommend it highly enough.

I understand that it was a big departure for the series, but it's a really great adventure title. I liked the sense of atmosphere and the game's unique approach to story telling. It was really hard for me to put down and it probably stands as my favourite Wii game. Anyways, I liked it, didn't you? What did you dislike about it?
I dislike Shattered Memories mostly for what it did to the story. I understand these were supposed to be "alternative" character, but damn...

Maybe it's because you played it first. For me, the character of Harry Mason was untouchable and shouldn't be shown in any game anymore.

Well, he had an appearance in SH3, but not the kind of we're talking about here...

Yeah, I get that. It's that reason that makes the films a bit of a sore point for me. I just saw the first and second movies back to back and I think the changes were entirely unnecessary and it did hamper my enjoyment. But it wasn't an issue for me when playing Shattered Memories (probably because I was still relatively new to the series).
There is a second movie?!
