I just came back from watching Steven Speilberg's Lincoln and of course they made him into a man that looks like your lovable old Uncle or Grandfather, but I know its obvious the Lincoln in the film is NOT the Lincoln in reality.

I have not seen the actual history yet, but its obivious Lincoln is not that good to be true. And its not just Lincoln:

Ghandi, Jefferson, Washington, and so many others are not that perfect. The only man the appears to be a true Saint in history was Martin Luther King Jr. and heck I may be wrong about him.

List of Saints. :-p

What do you perceive as saint? They all are just humans. People are not perfect. Why would you ever consider someone like Jefferson saint?

Lincoln is overrated, he only brought up an issue that was already dealt with over in Europe. If there was never any American Civil War I doubt we'd ever have heard of him.

Saint as a person who never does wrong and always did good things, not the spiritual version of a Saint.

Saints like Mercedes "Meche" Colomar :)

King supposedly had multiple extramarital affairs and plagiarized a good bit of his doctoral thesis.
I was named after Lincoln. I know him pretty well. No he wasn't a saint but NO ONE is, as you pointed out, well except for MLK, as you pointed out.

He did put to rest the greatest crime against humanity in this country's history. Even if he did do it for political means rather than ethical (which is probably the case) he still deserves credit for doing it.

I havn't seen the new movie and I'm a little tired to get into a Lincoln debate right this moment but later on I'd love to have a chat about it; a nice constructive chat, which in here is quite possible so long as neither of us is drunk off our ass. :D

NINJAD! MLK was a flilanderer, or however that's spelled. Now that I think of it, according to Homer Simpson Licoln sold poison milk to children.

In written history people are evil or saints depending on who writes it.

Not you Mr. Poem :\
No real saints exist, given your definition.

The best approximation I can think of are every day people, who do their best, try, expect nothing, but soldier on. Perfection is more of a concept, than a possibility.
Hmmmm, St. Telika?

It's so crazy it just might work!

Especially historical figure that "represent or stand for" a country like Lincoln for USA, Churchill for Britain, Charles De Gaulle for France and here in Ireland it's Michael Collins. To said something bad about them is nearly to insult your own country.

Okay, here's your official GOG martyr/saint badge. Don't mind the blood, there's only one to go around and the last guy didn't want to let go.
Gandhi was probably as close to a saint as you can get from the people you mentioned.

I'm gonna go with Mother Theresa too and some of the unknown people who worked alongside her or carry on her work.

I don't know much about the overall life of Oscar Schindler but he definitely did saintly things.

I can't remember now but there have been plenty of documentaries I've watched of people doing amazing things, helping the impoverished and the poor.

The thing is, well known people will very very rarely live up to those ideals. Fame, money, power corrupt. So, you can't call out well known names in history for the most part. The irony is people who are "saints" don't do it for the recognition - they just do it and we never ever hear about them except in extraordinary circumstances.

Schindler was a Nazi FYI. That's nothing against him, but he was a Nazi.
