To make a backup of a CD game you own legally with a program like Alchohol 52% and mount it to play it ? Even if it uses Safedisc for example ?

And another question, I suppose it's not legal, but can you use a no-cd crack on a digital download you bought for personnal use ?

Thank you in advance for your answers !

You violate the DMCA if your circumvent any type of DRM or copy protection put in place by the publisher - plain and simple, illegal in the eyes of the law - but it doesn't mean the law is right especially when it comes to an issue like fair use.

Thank you for your answer ! But as I see, it's a law in United States, is it the same for Canada ?

Canada has been so far unsuccessful in passing a DMCA style law, though they keep trying. You may want to contact your representatives up there.

If you want a No CD crack for your game you bought I don't know very many people who'd slander your good name for doing that. You may or may not show up as a counted "pirate" by industry standards, I'm really not sure how they count that kind of thing, though going by BSA standards it would seem we all pirate around 100,000 USD of software per year.

Ok, thank you for your answer. In my case, I didn't want to use no-cd crack, but only to backup old games to not scratch my Cds... So I suppose it's legal in Canada for now, but maybe not in the long term ? Hope Gog get these games, so I won't have any questions anymore :)
You're in canada. Anything goes there.

currently we have no federal representative due to parliament being resolved, but currently circumventing copy protection is still allowed.
Right from the horse's mouth:
30.6 It is not an infringement of copyright in a computer program for a person who owns a copy of the computer program that is authorized by the owner of the copyright to

(a) make a single reproduction of the copy by adapting, modifying or converting the computer program or translating it into another computer language if the person proves that the reproduced copy is

(i) essential for the compatibility of the computer program with a particular computer,
(ii) solely for the person’s own use, and
(iii) destroyed immediately after the person ceases to be the owner of the copy; or

(b) make a single reproduction for backup purposes of the copy or of a reproduced copy referred to in paragraph (a) if the person proves that the reproduction for backup purposes is destroyed immediately when the person ceases to be the owner of the copy of the computer program.
high rated
Yes, it is perfectly legal to fuck with your games however you want. ;)

That is basically what our copyright act says but I actually prefer your phrasing.

Sadly, in germany we have the DMCA kind of law, so everything circumventing copyright is illegal.

On the second question: just try it out. It might depend on the game you have bought.

If you give the copy to your friend Larry, it's illegal.

Also, if you're playing a copied game that has DRM on the CD, you'll need a No-CD crack 9 out of 10 times.
Even if it is illegal, do it.

Most legislation that covers copyright is intendet to fight the illegal proliferation of IP material. Nobody will go after you, if you make some copies for yourself.

Worst case scenario is that you have to agree to a cease and desist kind of letterr, in which you agree not to do it again. But nobody will even notice what you do with your stuff at home as long as you don't, lets say, post it on the internet.

And it will most likely be illegal, because, you don't own a game. You own the right to play it. Same with movies, music and the like.
