I've noticed that the recent releases for Mac on GOG mention that it requires Mac 10.7 or newer. Does this mean that GOG is dropping support for Mac 10.6.8?

Hmm. If the following is true why would you still want to use 10.6 unless you want ye olde Rosetta functionality?

The problem is that Mavericks also requires (and I'm using the kind of Mac I own for this example) a Mac Mini from early 2009 or newer, and I'm using a Mac Mini from mid 2007. So, in terms of upgrading my OS X version, I don't think I can go any higher than 10.6.8.

Yeah. It does. I do hope GOG continues to support Mac 10.6.

They'll drop it eventually. But, you also have to realize that computers of that vintage are not common anymore, My phone from 2010 before I replaced it was using a version of Android that represented about 2% of the total Android install base. I'm not sure what percentage of OSX users are still on 10.6, but I'm guessing it's a similarly tiny percentage of computers seeing as the update was free.

That being said, I can't imagine them dropping support for already purchased copies, this is more likely to affect new games coming here.

Future releases won't have 10.6. support. I expect the same thing to happen with XP sometime this year as well.

Wow, yeah, it's coming up that soon, isn't it? I hadn't realized that was happening so soon.

Fortunately, I don't use XP any more, except for in a VM for things that don't use the Internet.

Many modern games are simply not offering the support (for 10.6.8) to begin with. I would recommend trying things with Wine or CrossOver, it's amazing what you can get to run on a Mac.

I'd be curious to see if 10.6.8 being unsupported means 'won't work' or just 'no tech support'. I just looked at the Wiki page for 10.7, I'm not seeing anything new in terms of API's that GOG would require.

No, I mean sometime this year. I believe XP is still in the 30% of the Windows' install base. Which represents a significant number of systems. All of which can run essentially any classic game and most indie releases. It's a policy decision by GOG on when to stop officially supporting XP for such future releases.

I doubt GOG drops XP support anytime soon, however Developers are already dropping it with new games so number of games that do not work on XP will continue to increase in future. For older games there's no point of dropping it as most games were originally designed for XP or older and are far more likely have problem with newer OS' rather than with XP. Obviously GOG should step up it's efforts to make old games work on newer operating systems if they want to continue to sell them.
