I've gamed quite a bit on laptops, it was all I had from 2009 to 2010, and it's just rubbish compared to the real thing, not just because of the ergonomics and screen size, but because most laptop screens are pure shite in terms of image quality, and it's easy to be annoyed by heat & noise when it's right under you nose

Luckily you can hook it up to a tv or a monitor, and a real mouse & keyboard, for a better experience
I like playing casual games and strategy games on my laptop, relaxing on the couch or a chair. Still there is a more powerfull desktop in the house which is on when I have more time and want to play more intense.

A newer laptop can play most of the games and together with external monitor and wirelesss mouse and keyboard you can put the laptop whereever you want and have a clean desk and still the mobility.
Only problems are either the laptops arent powerful enough for AAA fps games (which I dont play) or the real powerful laptops are too loud and not really mobile.
Im forced to game exclusively on my laptop now because of new living situation. I do miss my desktop for sure, but i make the best of the situation. I play alot of FPS online and offline. I was always afraid of damaging my keyboard. Also, my neck started cramping because of constantly looking downward. I solved both problems by putting my laptop on a box so he screen is at eye level and i used a mini usb keyboard to play on. Its a great setup and now im happily playing on my laptop.

Supereor: I've always played PC games on a laptop for as long as I've owned PC games, and I've noticed that I tend to enjoy these games significantly less than others seem to. I prefer playing my games with a controller than a mouse and keyboard, but maybe it's because the keyboard at hand is on the actual computer itself...? Somebody said it could be that I subconsciously dislike PC games as a whole, though I disproved that with Terraria(also played without a controller), so maybe I wouldn't have as many problems getting into PC games as I do if I played on a desktop... What do you think?
If youre going to have to log a big tree, would you do it rather with chainsaw, axe or coping saw?

Atleast to me ergonomics mean alot on whether i enjoy a game or not.

I like to play with 24" (or multiple) vs the average 15" laptop screen. Also i like to have proper mouse, not touchpad or trackpoint. I like to type on full sized mechanical keyboard which is simply from other galaxy compared to the keys on any laptop. If you use headset all the time, sounds might not be issues to you - but i like to listen to 2+1 stereo with enough bass vs headset.

Ofcourse desktops are on average(!) way way more powerful than laptops, so the games will run better and with nice graphics options on desktop.

and so on.

I dont know what kind of games you like to play though, so its hard to say how much more you might enjoy playing on desktop than laptop though.

...there are ofcourse quite powerful gaming laptops, but they are silly expensive if you ask me.

Emob78: Gaming laptops have always been too expensive for my tastes. As soon as I think they've become affordable enough, the gaming industry ups the stakes with newer and better graphics, which causes yesterday's laptops to be incompatible with the new standards. That way the prices are always too high... and Alienware laptops? Forget it. You could get 2 really decent desktops for the price of one good gaming laptop.

If anyone knows of a laptop that plays games well, is upgradable, free of bloatware AND affordable, we're all ears.
Besides if a laptop becomes old and dated, you can't do anything about it. In a lot of cases if some of your parts of your desktop become outdated, you might be able to replace them.

I paid 500€ on the store near my place basically saying "I need a computer now, what do you have in stock?". This was 2 years ago, still use it to this day. And I don't just play GOGs, mind you: Skyrim, Shadow Warrior 2013, Saints Row IV, Dishonored... while it's true I haven't played The Witcher 2 because it looks real pretty and I only want to play it when I can set it to max, I generally don't much of a problem gaming on it and I intend to use it as my main gaming machine for a couple more years at least.

I'd call that pretty affordable.

Playing with a laptop is great. It's portable! And that helps a lot. I enjoy it.

But my gaming closet is where I really get into my game. I have a little dark closet with a desk, 5.1 surround sound and a nice widescreen monitor.

It's possible that the effect the developers are going for are just completely missed when you're playing with the laptop.

Games have a lot of aspects that different people enjoy. Immersion, cinematic effects, character-driven stories, emotional effects, combat gameplay and sound effects are almost always positively impacted by sticking yourself into a dark room and 5+.1+ surround sound. But some people don't value those game attributes as much as sheer creative, fluid or otherwise fun gameplay, humor or strategy.

So it's possible that you're missing out on what some developers are aiming to give you, but that's okay. If you really love the kind of games that lose little or nothing on a laptop and if you love the portability or small size of your gaming device, then go enjoy yourself and your laptop! Just make sure you're having a little fun every day.
It really depends on the kind of game. Laptops are perfect for low tech, turn-based games (homm, wesnoth, masters of magic, etc), but for full 3D fps immesion it feels odd (borderlands is just awkward).

Laptops have some sort of 'tabletop' gaming feel, to me.

zeffyr: I don't have a desk, so I'm playing with the laptop on my knees. I need only a power cord, since I don't use an external monitor and I can use a bluetooth mouse.

And it takes less space than with a desktop PC. Period. :)
you are talking about portability. if you did have a desk and you used your bluetooth mouse you would use more space than a desktop computer.
so no. you are using more space. whether its more convenient to use laptop over desktop is not relevant.

timppu: I still have a desktop PC (actually two) as well, and I can't really agree with that. A monitor and a keyboard for my desktop PC does not take less space than my laptop with a mouse (it has the monitor and keyboard integrated into it).
but yes it does...
in my case.
a keyboard is as long as my laptop but its half its width. with monitor they take pretty much exact amount of space.
but:
power cord, mouse cable, headphone cable. they all take space on the desk which would be empty if i was sitting on a desktop.
furthermore: monitor sits at the end of the table. a space which is less useable than front which is easily reachable. So more space to use on your desk
And I don't really see much difference whether the USB cable of the mouse goes to the side of my laptop, or the back of the tower PC on the floor. If anything, the latter is more inconvenient, if the cord gets tangled with the power and monitor cables and you have to crawl under the desk to sort it out.
really?
usb mouse takes around 2cm^2 area on left side of my laptop. this is a lot of space wasted on cable. my headphones with their 5cm long jack are even more annoying. furthermore cable lies across the table instead of gong straight towards the wall. so even more space wasted.
your argument about cables being tangled is invalid. i don't deny laptop has benefits. i deny the fact that its space saver.
Anyway, I mostly use a wireless mouse (and occasionally a keyboard) with my laptop anyway, so...
wireless mouse would solve one of the issues no doubt...
but you also use extra keyboard. how does that prove that laptop takes less space when you have a second keyboard. do you use both keyboards at once or is second keyboard performing a task your laptop keyboard for some reason cant do?

The main advantage of the laptop is not really the space savings on a table either, but that it is far more easier to use it anywhere (coffee table in the living room, kitchen table etc.), and put away completely in the cupboard if needed. A desktop PC permanently occupies one table (and sometimes even a whole room) at your home.
not discussing portability. irrelevant.
a computer occupying a whole room hasn't happened in 50 years. so not sure what you mean by that.

Naturally if you have set up a whole desktop environment for your laptop, with external monitors, docking stations, external hard drives, printers, fax machines, telex machines, tube radios, B&W TVs etc., then there are no space savings either. But even then you can still take the laptop out of the docking station, and continue using it in e.g. the living room or elsewhere.
portability =/= space saving.

zeffyr said that desktop wastes space in comparison to laptop. portability of laptop allows you to shift the space used by computer but it definitely does not take less space than desktop.

It just does. Proof:

(tower + monitor + keyboard + mouse + speakers + desk + chair + power cables ) > (laptop + mouse + power cable + couch)

:-)
Depends on if you have a shitty $500 laptop or a $2500 gaming laptop.
