I've been dying to play it lately, I never played a space game as huge as this, but I don't have any experience with the series so I'm not 100% sure I'll like it, plus some people seem to find it very content light at the moment.

How is the game content-wise at launch? Also, since they require a constant internet connection (which is a shame), are the servers having problems?

On a sidenote, maybe some of the players would like to take this opportunity to introduce themselves and maybe meet some fellow GOG users in the game.
I pretty much have the same questions, so *bump*
So...Nobody?
Wanted to get at launch but lost all interest after they announced always online. I'll just wait for Egosoft to make a real X4.
Just curious, but is there anything like it DRM-free?
No there is DRM there is no offline singleplayer you have to log in to play the game as it connects to a server even for the singleplayer just like sim city and diablo 3.

That is why a number of us requested refunds as when the game was on kickstarter they did state there would be an offline mode but they canned that a month before release.

He said anything like it, as in other games.

Not since devs announced that the game will be online only.

There will be server problems, I can pretty much guarantee it.

There's a free game based on the Elite series called Pioneer. Apart from that, there isn't really anything on the same scale, but you have Wing Commander: Privateer here on GOG. Might be others as well, but can't recall any from the top of my head.
well, after the fiascos with online only and refusing or at best according only partial refunds, this game is a big no go/buy for me.
gl
I don't know.
1. there is a cash shop directly on their buy now site (one day after release)
2. the persistent internet connection

p.s. I spent for example ~$400-500 into Neverwinter so far for all kind of stuff like mounts, bags, storage, hireling upgrades etc. These cash shops are... hmm

According to an acquaintance of mine, there are server problems, but he seems to be quite happy with game, when it works, that is. Despite playing online, he said he haven't seen any human players yet, so ingame world probably really that big. Yet if there is no one around, why would you need other players? Probably even EVE is not that empty.
In addition, he said that game has pretty high entry bar, so it's not your average modern faceroll, and RTFM is necessary, especially if you haven't played previous Elite.

Personally, always online is no-go for me, plus I still have PTSD-alike from X-Rebirth fiasco.
To be honest, I've been playing it on and off since the gamma release and I find it all very underwelming. Of course the whole mandatory online PR debacle they got off to a bad start to begin with, but also they still have to fix a bug that causes the frame to flicker with my headtracker. Then there are still a lot of bad design decissions like: terrible spacecraft controls which aren't Newtonian nor arcade but boy does it suck, then there is the decission to not incorporate external views for reasons that can only be explained as something that wouldn't be an issue as it weren't for the online tyrants who had to get their way.

If you want something similar to play, Wing Commander: Privateer, Freelancer, I-War 2: EoC, A.I.M.: Artificial Intelligence Machines, Hardtruck: Apocalypse, Eurotruck Simulator 2 and the free game Pioneer.
As already mentioned, you could take a look at the X games. I believe X3: Reunion is the latest, and is DRM free from Gamersgate.

No Man's Sky, currently in development, looks like an awesome space exploration title, although what has been released so far hasn't really shown much of what the actual gameplay involves.

Going older, the Wing Commander: Privateer games here on GOG are in a similar vein as well.

Uhm, Latest X is X-Rebirth. Recently it was updated to 3.0 version (adding to confusion, but those not the driods you're looking for), Update offered some improvements to previous versions and original design, But really, I don't have time, nor desire to dig through new changes. Not that I do not appreciate new stuff, but the way devs behaved initially removed respect they had before.
Though I was among few those who could complete campaign in few days after release, even if campaign never been main hook for me in X-universe.

Speaking of older X-games, I think X2 is my favorite. It doesn't look that bad, yet ships have unique cockpits, feature lost in X3 (somewhat mitigated by mods). There are many discussions about X-universe markets, economy, quests, ships, basically tonnes of info, I think it's impractical to discuss them here. Really don't know which one to recommed, as I biased, but soon Steam will have X-mas sale, and as X-superbox present there, it may be wise to wait and buy games there. Yet beware, some find X-universe ultimately boring or even annoying. I spend several hundred hours there, but we are all different.
