When the first request for Obama's birth certificate came up, he schemed an ingenious plot. By failing to immediately put the matter to rest he gave every idiot something to cling to... a scandal of presidential proportians. It paid off when the group grew large enough to be labeled and warrant a representative. And thus the "birthers" were born and Trump took the lead. However, Trump had the resources to find the truth and if he did then he could withdraw his claim and save face by stating that he had only sought to put the matter to rest. Obama could have come out at any time before but deliberately chose now and hammered the final discrediting nail in the gold plated/lined casket of what could have been a potential (laughably) contender.
Invalid? Yes.
A very reasonable and practical scheme that I would have done? I think so.
