UPDATE 22.04.2011:
We have uploaded a new version of the Downloader (0.9.0.1218). Please download it at your convenience and let us know if any of the problems you experienced earlier still persist.
Major changes include:
fixed problems with logging on,
the Downloader no longer attempts to move files after changing the destination folder,
you can now change the number of concurrent downloads (1 to 10) in the Downloader's options, in case you think the Downloader is overusing your connection.

UPDATE #2 (22.04.2011):
Version 0.9.0.1224 is out, introducing some backend fixes.

AkiMatti: So, clicking the Login does not do anything.
Yup, same story here as well. If the new downloader can at least use a proxy server, then I can use CCProxy to direct the "traffic" to the correct authentication proxy server.

So, has the issue of some Windows 7 users not being able to log in to the downloader been addressed?
I tried to download using the GOG downloader beta and can only get 9602MB downloaded out of 9723MB before it stops receiving any more data. The downloader is not paused and shows that I'm online, but just doesn't seem to be transferring/downloading file data anymore. I rebooted windows and restarted the downloader, but there appears to be no gain in doing that. So for the moment, I'm 121MB shy of a full download for the installer to initiate. What gives? I almost forgot to mention that I'm using Windows Vista and IE8 explorer.

Zoidberg: Witcher 2 is stuck at 9602Mo and Gothic 2 doesn't seem to budge.

sera: and won't, at least for a few days. You may notice the tiny purple region on the download bar, that region isn't available for download yet. This is a very simple yet effective measure to stop people playing the game prior to release without DRM. Lets just hope that the files weren't included in the preview code released to the press, otherwise by now the game will be up and ready to play on torrent sites.
So what's the purpose of letting us purchase it and try downloading it if we can't get all the files to play the game? What the heck is DRM, I'm not savvy to all this...other than to believe I was paying for a game I would be able to download and begin playing!

JG9H001: I just tried to download the new witcher game with the new Downloader program and it stopped transfering information when it got need the end of the 9 GB file (only 100 more MBs to go). The data transfer rate is 0 (before it was 1mB / sec). How do I get it to finish the transfer?
This is exactly what happened to me. I had just a "few" more bytes to go, and the downloader stopped. I have 31 "chunk" files. When I relaunch the Downloader, it said something like "Duplicate call, blah blah" and then DELETED the Witcher entry. Now when I launch the downloader (by itself) it is empty! How do I finish downloading???

Same here. Witcher 2 stopped download at exactly 9602 MB of 9723 MB. It's now paused even though I can toggle pause and resume all I like, the download does not start again. I tried to relaunch the downloader multiple times (killing all processes, because it always starts like 3 processes) but nothing works.
Deleted it from the list and re-added it - nothing. Seems like a bug since everyone is having this problem.

Guys. The pre-order only lets you get 90% (or 95?) of the game. You'll be able to download the remaining section when the game is actually out.

The game isn't released yet, in case you hadn't noticed. They're letting you download the game before it comes out, or at least 95% of it, so that you'll only have to download a little bit more when the release date comes. The point is that you'll only need to download for a few minutes before installing if you've pre-downloaded the game; other services that are distributing The Witcher 2 digitally don't have that pre-download phase and thus those users will have to wait longer to play.

DRM stands for Digital Rights Management, which is, to put simply, software that is often bundled with a software product (game, movie, music, etc.) that exists to ensure that you can only use the software in ways that the publisher wants you to. If you've ever heard of SecuROM, Tages, etc., those are examples of third-party DRM often bundled with games. DRM can range in severity from forcing you to put the game's disc in your DVD drive, to requiring online activation before you can play, to limiting how many times you can install the game, etc. One of GOG.com's selling points is that none of their games include any DRM whatsoever, meaning you actually own the games you buy, and can use them without restriction.

Then they should have made it clear, instead this looks like a bug.

I know the game isn't out but with Steam you can still download the game and it will just decrypt at release or they could have let you download it completely but without the installer / launcher whatever.

This isn't Steam. GOG Downloader is a simple tool designed to download your games error-free by allowing you to pause and unpause, without having to download the whole thing again if the file ends up corrupt. It does not have the capability to fully pre-download games and unlock them (since that would require some sort of online authentication, something GOG is wholly against). Furthermore, the GOG Downloader is in beta and was only recently released. It's still buggy and labeled as a work in progress. In short, you are under no compulsion to use it, and if you choose to take advantage of something that is labeled as a beta product, you should at least do the slightest bit of research on it before complaining about issues.

Also, on the front page it clearly says "PRE-DOWNLOAD NOW, PLAY INSTANTLY IN X DAYS" in big, red letters. I don't know about you, but that's pretty damn obvious to me.

Agreed. This is exactly what I figured would happen (the final piece to be a separately-downloable item next week). It wasn't until a few minutes ago that I wondered if perhaps all the downloads stop at a "Paused" condition, and then next week you can pickup where you left off.

I won't be the last person to think this is a bug... unless they all read this post before posting. :)

Thanks for the confirmation. The way they handled it was unexpected but it makes sense now.

Hi, with the new downloader I loaded the available witcher 2 files down. Unfortunately only
9602 of 9723 MB were downloaded. How do I get the rest? Starting a new download was not possible. The downloader is online!
Greetings Mike

A few minutes later: I found the explanation myself. Everything oK. No reply necessary.

Running Windows 7 64-bit and the 0.9.0.1372 downloader. I noted the warning about Win7 but just wonder how long others have had to wait for TW2 to appear in the downloader? I logged in fine but after 30 minutes there's still no sign that anything is about to start downloading.

Since some others have mentioned the download stopping at around 95% I just want to say THANK YOU GOG!
I've had a system completely trashed by SecuROM and won't go near DRM now as a result. It was a pleasant surprise to find we could pre-download. Holding back the final piece is inspired - it sure beats the DRM alternative.

Now, if I could only get the downloader working I'd be jumping around with joy.

UPDATE: A day later...
I don't know what was happening yesterday but today the downloader just started working. It ran through without any problems whatsoever and downloaded all available parts in 4 hours. Fantastic! Thanks GOG.

People are getting confused by these old Downloader versions. Can you link the latest version in this post too?
