UPDATE 22.04.2011:
We have uploaded a new version of the Downloader (0.9.0.1218). Please download it at your convenience and let us know if any of the problems you experienced earlier still persist.
Major changes include:

the Downloader no longer attempts to move files after changing the destination folder,
you can now change the number of concurrent downloads (1 to 10) in the Downloader's options, in case you think the Downloader is overusing your connection.

sera: I find the new downloader a bit of a disappointment. The advantages over the old air downloader are rather minor. Where are the convenient features that I may want?

Some of the things I want from the gog downloader are:
-Keep a library of bought games and act as a launcher (really the best part of steam).
-Ability to download extras, preferably by just right clicking any game in your library and selecting which you want. Possibly change right click to making each game a tree that can be expanded to show extras.
-Auto patching or at least automatic check for patches.
-Window resizing really this isn't '95 so why do we have to use the one size? I want to make it thinner and if I had a library then a little longer.

Really that's about it. I don't need chat or a store or a games overlay. This is a specialty program that knows exactly what it has to offer, so why does it need us to perform all these extra steps?
avatar
sear: I'm not sure I understand. This program is meant to download and nothing more. While I agree about being able to download extras, and checking for updates (that might even be in the newest version), pretty much everything else you suggest would just add to the bloat you seem to be against in the first place. It's a program to pause, resume and verify downloads, nothing more.
It's a program to download gog games that the user owns. The program already connects to gog to check if we own the game, so why not go that tiny step further and have it display what we own? It is a very minor step to handle that and adds very little extra pressure to system resources (In the realms of a few KB of memory), if it has the ability to display a library then it should also have the ability to launch the game since it only takes a couple of lines of code to handle. The most strenuous part of all this is probably sorting the list of games, This takes a lot of comparisons but the list just won't get big enough for this to ever become a problem.

So in short I'm not asking for bloat. I'm asking for legitimate, useful, resource lite features that are both easy to implement and hugely beneficial to the end user. I'm not asking them to add useless features or add features that are beyond the realms of a downloader, just features that will enrich the majority of users experience and make gog a much easier place for newbies.
Hi Guys,

I am having some trouble with the new GOG downloader version 0.9.0.1372.

I don't seem to be able to login. The login button does not respond to clicks.
When I add a game via the download with GOG Downloader link it is added to the queue but seems to get no further than attempt to retreive the game details.

I am running Windows 7 32 bit. UAC is disabled. I am running ESET Smart Security but the problem persists even when ESET is disabled.

Attached is a screenshot of the state that the app is in. The options button works. I can also close to tray and from there I can access the right click menu and it seems to work fine (Run at Startup, Open Downloader, Check for Updates, Help, About, Quit).

I am behind a proxy. What ports does the downloader use? Does it use the proxy settings defined for the system?

Thanks for the Assistance.

I've lauinched the downloads for Witcher 1,2 and Gothic 2 this morning while I was at work.

Only Witcher 1 is done, Witcher 2 is stuck at 9602Mo and Gothic 2 doesn't seem to budge.

What's up?

and won't, at least for a few days. You may notice the tiny purple region on the download bar, that region isn't available for download yet. This is a very simple yet effective measure to stop people playing the game prior to release without DRM. Lets just hope that the files weren't included in the preview code released to the press, otherwise by now the game will be up and ready to play on torrent sites.
I'd like to report an issue I had with the downloader.

I've used it to download The Witcher Enhanced Edition, and the game downloaded fine. But the chunk files from the last part downloaded (in my case "setup_the_witcher_enhanced_edition-3.bin") weren't erased after the download completed.

The "setup_the_witcher_enhanced_edition-3.bin" file was created correctly, but the chunk files were also left in the game folder.

Since the only chunk files left in the folder were from "setup_the_witcher_enhanced_edition-3.bin", I assume the downloader isn't erasing only the chunk files form the last downloaded part.

I can't say if this error is reproducible because I've only used the downloader this one time. By the way, I'm using the latest version as of this writing (v0.9.0.1372)

Hope this info can be of help. Thanks a lot for your attention and patience!

Regards,

Brotoles

Update: I wasn't near the computer when the download completed, so I assumed that the last downloaded part was from the "...-3.bin" file, but the I checked the timestamps on the .bin files, and they were all created sequentially, so it seems they are all created after the download completes.

Now I don't know why only the "..-3.bin" chunk files remained then... Maybe a coincidence, or a bug specific to the Witcher download. I'm downloading more games now, and I'll check if this happens to other games as well...

Thanks once again, bye

I have version 0.9.0.1372

I downloaded Gothic 2 with no problems. Then I added Battle Isle Platinum to the downloader, and it immediately set the download progress for Gothic 2 to zero and tried to start downloading it again. I checked the folder and the installer for Gothic 2 was just gone.

Needless to say it's quite annoying to have a 2GB file just erased, bandwidth is not cheap where I'm from.
I just tried to download the new witcher game with the new Downloader program and it stopped transfering information when it got need the end of the 9 GB file (only 100 more MBs to go). The data transfer rate is 0 (before it was 1mB / sec). How do I get it to finish the transfer?

Fortunately, I have almost unlimited bandwidth(But I do pay 60€ for internet/digital TV service combo). So I just deleted gothic 2 from the downloader and downloaded from the browser.

Try to close the program and start it again.

GoG games come in some kind of compression, I don't know how easy it would be to decompress the incomplete download but it doesn't seem to be very easy. If is is indeed hard to, as I think, by the time they recompile the game will be out and by then anyone can distribute it. Also the game requires activation.

Is there any way to get the new downloader to work via the system proxy server, as was possible with the AIR version of the old downloader?

I know I can download via the browser, but with no download resume support and multi gigabyte files, I can not risk it...

The Witcher 2 from gog is DRM free, so no activation. The code you get is an optional registration. The only authentication needed is to download the game.

You're right, the activation is optional.

It's important to state it's optional or you are doing a disfavor to the goodwill shown by CD Projekt.

I've tried more yesterday and Gothic 2 would download, reach 40 or 50MB then go back to 20-25.

Just downloaded it with my browser.

Thanks for the confirmation for Witcher 2. :)

I have exactly the same problem. The only difference is that I'm using WIndows 7 64 bit. Otherwise, I use proxy for internet access and ESET Smart Security (NOD32).

So, clicking the Login does not do anything.

I wasn't aware of it, only double checked when you said so ;-)
