We're happy to present a reasonably polished beta version of our latest Downloader. It's more robust than the current one and sports similar features, but the best thing about it is that it's made entirely in-house. We've got this guy who wrote it from the ground up, which means we can be a lot more flexible when it comes to fixing bugs and introducing new features (and we've got some cool ones lined up!).

Before we roll out the final release, we would like some of you guys and gals to try it out and let us know in case you encounter any problems.

Above problems are already fixed, will be pushed with the next release.

You can download the installer here:
http://static.gog.com/download/d3/beta/Setup_Downloader_3.0.24.exe

On Windows XP and Vista, the installer will automatically download the .NET Framework, if you don't have it already. Once you launch the actual app, it's much like the current Downloader, so you should feel right at home.
We will keep rolling out new versions as we remove bugs and add stuff. You will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch the Downloader, or check for updated manually (under Settings).

Let us know if you like it, or if you encounter any issues we don't know about!

PMIK: The in-built updater downloaded the new version fine. When it was trying to install it forgot to shut down the current version. It came up with an error that the file was in use. It installed properly once I manually shutdown the downloader. Maybe you should have the updater automatically quit before installing the update?
The updater should close the downloader before, did you use "Check for updates" button or it was automatic during startup?
Just reporting that the updated version still has the same bug: if I choose to save to a root folder (D:\), the magnifying glass takes me to My Documents.

Fallen_Zen: snip
I used the check for updates button. Definitely didn't shut down itself.

Yes, this was fixed this morning, will push it with the next update :)
I just ran the downloader and applied the update. It downloaded and restarted OK, then after a second said
GOG.com Downloader has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
It's apparently a system.io.fileloadexception. It crashes every time I try to start it up.

Did you have any downloads on the list before applying the update? Try clearing the GOG.com folder in application data:

On Vista/7 it should be here: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\GOG.com
On Windows XP: C:\Documents & Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\GOG.com

This is on the to-do list.
any changelogs?

my downloader updated just fine and works fine. I can see that avatar is downloaded properly.

That did the trick. Thanks!

Ok, had to create a second partition to test that ;)
You're right, I fixed it, will be on next update.
No one's noticed that a game download now explicitly states "GAME" now? Sounds like a clear indicator of the capability of downloading extras to me.

That's what I'd guess too.

Pushed another update, with the above mentioned bugs fixes. Thanks for the help ;)
The automatic update notification system works for me. And it asks me before before downloading anything, just the way I like it :) .

Has a scheduler been suggested yet?

I just downloaded the update for the installer, and now it just crashes on me. It tells me that there's an error, but it won't tell me what it is, and just tells me to send my logfile to support.

Edit: After uninstalling, reinstalling, and not accepting the update, I get the exact same error when I try to just log in.
