We're happy to present a reasonably polished beta version of our latest Downloader. It's more robust than the current one and sports similar features, but the best thing about it is that it's made entirely in-house. We've got this guy who wrote it from the ground up, which means we can be a lot more flexible when it comes to fixing bugs and introducing new features (and we've got some cool ones lined up!).

Before we roll out the final release, we would like some of you guys and gals to try it out and let us know in case you encounter any problems.

Above problems are already fixed, will be pushed with the next release.

You can download the installer here:
http://static.gog.com/download/d3/beta/Setup_Downloader_3.0.24.exe

On Windows XP and Vista, the installer will automatically download the .NET Framework, if you don't have it already. Once you launch the actual app, it's much like the current Downloader, so you should feel right at home.
We will keep rolling out new versions as we remove bugs and add stuff. You will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch the Downloader, or check for updated manually (under Settings).

Let us know if you like it, or if you encounter any issues we don't know about!

Ok, I tried it from my work.

Installs fine.
I log in (I'm also logged in to the web pages already). It logs in fine.
I clicked Settings => Check for updates: it is up to date.
Save settings.

Now, what should happen next? All I see is the grey main screen, "Resume all" and "Pause all" buttons are greyed out.

Am I supposed to see e.g. a list of my GOG games on the server, or what? I don't, or is it still fetching them as I have quite a lot of GOG games?

It would be nice if it gave some visual feedback what it is trying to do, if anything. Is it still fetching the game list (how many % completed?), is it trying to connect to GOG servers (unsuccessfully), or what?

Can I presume now that this downloader does not work from corporate network, from behind a proxy? I think I'll next try one of the 3rd party GOG downloaders made by users, at least one of them is supposed to work anywhere where the basic http downloads work as well. I can download GOG games from here by using the direct links.

timppu: snip
Go to your GOG shelf, click on game, click Add to downloader.

It's not quite as much Steamlike yet.

PMIK: I thought I'd put the downloader through its paces and download The Witcher 2.

I left it going overnight and when I woke up it had stopped and the following message under the progress bar "Checksum error on chunk 0, please contact support!"

The download folder has 911mb and I can't see any way to continue my download. This has never happened with the old downloader so I assume its a bug?
Try removing and adding the game again back to the list, it should check what's already downloaded and resume.

Ah ok, so the downloads are still started from the web page (bazilisek), I just misunderstood how it is supposed to work.

Works from corporate network, Alone in the Dark trilogy seemed to download ok. Too bad it doesn't download the extras too, so this is still not a replacement for the unofficial downloaders.

(Albeit, I tend to trust official downloaders more if I need to enter login information etc...)

Out of curiosity, what happens if a game installer is updated on the server while I'm in the middle of downloading the old version?

predcon: {EDIT; 2 seconds later...}
And right out of the gate there's a problem. My browser stops downloading the setup executable at 2.6MB every time I've tried downloading it (three times; that's enough of a test for me), and every time the "predicted" file size was 3.4MB. I tried running the file anyway, and was told that the "setup files appear to be corrupted, download them again". The one time I retried downloading the file over the 'corrupted' file already in my default download folder (I forgot to put it in the Recycle Bin to prevent the retry from being appended with a '(1)'), it downloaded completely.
The timeout should not occur anymore. Did you use this link http://static.gog.com/download/d3/beta/Setup_Downloader_3.0.12.exe ?

If so can you PM me your IP address and the time you have tried to download the installer? We'll look in our server log to track the issue.
I tried it for giggles. Noticed 2 things:
-the speed at the bottom is exaggerated. it says 1Mbps, but the downloaded file size increases about 250 kb at a time, which makes sense since 250 kb is near my internet's maximum download speed.
-I tried adding Witcher 2 for giggles, even though I've completely downloaded it earlier, but the downloader doesn't notice the already downloaded files. I even renamed the old folder to the_witcher2 (from witcher2 that the old downloader used), but it still doesn't notice it. would be kind of cool if it did.

I think you might be mixing bits with bytes. File size is usually measured in bytes, so if your file increases by 250 kB at a time (and "at a time" means "every 2 seconds") then 1Mbps is correct.

Ah, yes. In my writing, I mixed the two (like I seemingly always do). I meant bytes, of course. The downloader says "MB/s" and "KB/s" (I guess that's Kilo :D). I've also figured out the exaggeration. The downloader starts with an exaggerated speed shown and slowly goes to the real value, but I downloaded a 17 MB game and it didn't have time to calm down. Now I'm downloading a larger one, and after some 20 MB it started showing values around "260.85 KB/s". At first it said the download speed was "1.7 MB/s", though (which likely didn't reflect reality).

Well you can start a speedtest.net and take a look how speed behaves. Often it starts at a larger value than you really should have. It's because that when you exceed the speed you're paying for, you ISP throttles the speed automatically. Therefore the speed stabilizes over time. The app is just counting bytes downloaded from the Web and updates the speed value every second.

I downloaded it straight from the link in Firek's OP. I'm not sure if my IP address will do you much good, as it's used by a "Network Operations Center" which handles all the satellite modems assigned to it. In other words, a lot of other people have the same address. I also deleted the setup exec when I finished with it, so I can't look at the "Created on" date/time.

After adding Anachronox to my queue (around 2am, UTC -5), and came back to check on it at 7am, it had stopped with 10MB to go. I tried pausing and unpausing a few times, but it took having to exit the Downloader and restarting it to get it to complete the download. Once it did, it auto-launched the installer just fine.

For satellite users, this version of the Downloader seems to be a lot better.
Hey guys,

I've promised you an update today, but we're still doing some polishing and fixing so I guess this will happen tomorrow.

Sorry for the small delay :)

Ok, I'll pass the info to our admin team. Thanks!

For reference, that IP is 67.142.172.25. You might see it (along with another, which I can't remember at the moment) as the signature for several "anonymous" Wikipedia edits. I register my own name when I can, to differentiate myself from others that have their signals directed to the same NOC.
We've pushed an update to the downloader, please let us know if you encounter any problems. Have fun :)

The in-built updater downloaded the new version fine. When it was trying to install it forgot to shut down the current version. It came up with an error that the file was in use. It installed properly once I manually shutdown the downloader. Maybe you should have the updater automatically quit before installing the update?

Nice, noticed my avatar is now visible. I will commence downloading some games.
