It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

We're happy to present a reasonably polished beta version of our latest Downloader. It's more robust than the current one and sports similar features, but the best thing about it is that it's made entirely in-house. We've got this guy who wrote it from the ground up, which means we can be a lot more flexible when it comes to fixing bugs and introducing new features (and we've got some cool ones lined up!).

Before we roll out the final release, we would like some of you guys and gals to try it out and let us know in case you encounter any problems.

Above problems are already fixed, will be pushed with the next release.

You can download the installer here:
http://static.gog.com/download/d3/beta/Setup_Downloader_3.0.24.exe

On Windows XP and Vista, the installer will automatically download the .NET Framework, if you don't have it already. Once you launch the actual app, it's much like the current Downloader, so you should feel right at home.
We will keep rolling out new versions as we remove bugs and add stuff. You will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch the Downloader, or check for updated manually (under Settings).

Let us know if you like it, or if you encounter any issues we don't know about!

Tormentfan: Exactly why do people use an extra piece of software to dl their games when the browser does the same job, without having to install yet more software?

I've never understood the need for a Gog dowloader.
I'd want one to download several titles (maybe even all) titles with one or few clicks, including all the extras. Especially as now extras can include some quite important stuff too, e.g. Earth 2140 Trilogy extras include the DOS version of the whole game, which is the only version of the game with properly working enemy AI. (The base Windows version AI is apparently broken, already in retail, and it was never patched to work.).

Also, it would be nice if it was able to make a md5 or whatever checkup automatically, whether the installation files you have downloaded earlier are the current ones, or need a re-download.

But, it has to stay optional. I don't want a mandatory GOG client required to run the games, or even download them. There always has to be the option for http downloads, as a backup solution.

Fallen_Zen: Any comments, suggestions and bug reports are more than welcome.
I'll try to remember to try it from work tomorrow, but does this version work from corporate networks too, from behind proxy servers? The earlier GOG Downloader didn't IIRC.

Some third-party GOG downloaders made by GOG users apparently work from corporate networks just fine, without any fancy workarounds. Sometimes KISS (keep it simple, stupid) is really the best way.

Vagabond: Great! I found another issue: the downloader unpauses whenever another game is added to the queue. If I paused downloads, it gets auto-started again after I add another game.
avatar
Fallen_Zen: Thanks.
Some more issues. Upon launch, I get a JIT dialogue box. (see screen).

Another: When adding to the queue Republic: The Revolution, the download doesn't start. It's probably because this game was removed from the catalog while ago.

The debugger window always opens up for you? If not, since when it is happening?
Your log file will be much appreciated.

As for the Republic: The Revolution, I'll ask what can we do about it if anything.

Thanks!

P.S. We'll be pushing an update tomorrow for the downloader, maybe the problem is already fixed.

Sent you an e-mail!

I'm unsure as to what I did to make the debugger window come up. I don't think I uninstalled or changed anything after installing the GOG Downloader.

Tried the new beta as the current downloader has stopped working for me (see: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/gog_downloader_appears_to_be_broken), and it seems to work fine, the only issue I found so far is that is seems to take quite a number of seconds (in the range of ~20) between launching the program and the main window appearing, not sure if this is an issue or just the fact it's a .NET app, as .NET apps tend to be generally quite horrible anyway.

It's a bit dssapointing to see the downloader using the .NET framework, but such is the trend these days, and I guess it offers the easiest maintenance path for the GoG code monkey(s). :P

Good to hear it's working for you :) As for the opening times, I can do some benchmarking. Can you tell me your computer specs and OS? I'll try to imitate the environment.

I have Republic as well, so I gave it a try too.

"Connection error, try again later!" That's all I get.

Where would I find the log file?

kavazovangel: Hats? Achievements? :D
Just one hat. But it's an awesome one. ;)
I hope the information I provided not successfully getting the older version to work helped you guys figure out why slightly longer ping rates caused such an issue. I'll install this now and start working on downloading Anachronox tonight to see how it goes.

{EDIT; 2 seconds later...}
And right out of the gate there's a problem. My browser stops downloading the setup executable at 2.6MB every time I've tried downloading it (three times; that's enough of a test for me), and every time the "predicted" file size was 3.4MB. I tried running the file anyway, and was told that the "setup files appear to be corrupted, download them again". The one time I retried downloading the file over the 'corrupted' file already in my default download folder (I forgot to put it in the Recycle Bin to prevent the retry from being appended with a '(1)'), it downloaded completely.

Also, since this sticky is probably going to get really long really quickly, it might be nice if Firek/the OP made the first post appear on every consecutive page, since it also contains the download link.

Just making a little more noise about update checking. For GOGs.

Each time it starts, the Downloader should check for updated GOGs and it shouldn't be limited to those that are in your current queue, either, but should check each GOG in your "download to" folder.

On the Wiki we maintain a table of installer checksums and whatnot, having updates brought to us automatically would make it so much easier to maintain that table.

Now, currently, the version 2 downloader does get updated GOGs, but only if that GOG was added to the queue in the same "session". IE: I've reinstalled Windows since downloading all of my GOGs, so it won't grab the updates now. That's not ideal, it should just always get updates regardless.

Fallen_Zen: Snip.
I thought I'd put the downloader through its paces and download The Witcher 2.

I left it going overnight and when I woke up it had stopped and the following message under the progress bar "Checksum error on chunk 0, please contact support!"

The download folder has 911mb and I can't see any way to continue my download. This has never happened with the old downloader so I assume its a bug?
I'm also testing the downloader and interestingly enough, it is using just about excactly half of my bandwith. Which leaves browsing pleasently unaffected, unlike Steam or Origin.

Is that intended?

Did you see the "Number of Concurrent Connections" settings? It's default is a low number.
Bumpin, so people see.

Shouldn't this be a sticky?
