So, what do you guys think of this? I think I'd prefer if someone else had it, Interplay doesn't inspire much confidence in the possibility of a sequel, but maybe they could make a nice deal for a third party to make it.
Odds on the the first game + expansion being bumped from $5.99 to $9.99 now?.
I say ..

no, I will not say it...
Holy shit, 7,000 bucks for Freespace? Looks like Herve just got it on Steam sale
Less than 8 thousand dollars? What the hell? They'll make that much in a day or two of it being released on Steam. :/

EDIT: Talk about getting a free IP.

Hey, any other dying companies that we could team up and buy an IP or two from?

Well, at least already have Interplay here on GOG, but it would be irritating to see that bump up in price too.
I say fuck them.

Why can't the guys at Interplay understand the brand has been ruined for a long time, and let the company die already? We all know that even if they buy IPs they won't be able to do anything with them anyway, considering they don't have anyone on staff who's actually capable of making a video game.

I don't care all that much about the Freespace IP since space flight games aren't really my thing, but still...

They could always outsource the work for it?

They could except for the fact that don't actually have enough money to pay someone else to do the work for them. And I doubt anyone is stupid enough to lend money to a game company that hasn't actually made a game in the last ten years.
I was about to say "How can Interplay afford to buy _anything_?", but then I saw the price tag ...

They could always go down the current trend of funding it through Kickstarter. Looking at what they have in development, it's possible they could create something, but it's something to definitely watch with interest.

They tried the crowdfunding thing on their own site via reviving the Black Isle brand, which they didn't have much success with IIRC. I suppose they might try the kickstarter way too.

The thing is, Interplay as a brand is completely ruined, they don't have any credibility as game makers since they haven't actually made a game in a very long time (and everyone who made their last games is long gone), and judging from their efforts on their own site they don't even know how to make a KS project attractive except by trying to milk a brand which is completely unknown to newer gamers, and which most older ones know enough about to realize it's been long dead.

So why would anyone actually give them money? I can't think of a single reason.
As for what they "have in development"? AFAIK, nothing. Keep in mind that Interplay spent the last decade saying they were developing something (like Fallout Online), and never actually making anything.
I suppose this is for making sequels? Because they never seemed to have lost the rights to sell Freespace 1 and 2.

Interplay was already the one selling it on GOG. I can only think the rights to sell the old games and the rights to make new ones had been separated somehow and Interplay had retained the former, but lost the latter (now regained).

Damn. At that price it is really a shame that CDProject didn't buy the IP. Or we Gogites could have bought it together and lent it to some good developer. Why didn't they advertise that it was for sale at such a low price? And why didn't they try an auction? Whoever sold the rights rolled a critical fail on haggling, it seems.

same thing happened when Bethesda got the fallout rights
