While driving to work this morning i imagined a funny way of defining what a console is (gaming consoles). It goes like this;

You know that 10 year old computer you threw out previously because it was worthless rubbish? I took that computer from your rubbish bin, rigged it so my new game will only run on that computer then i sold it back to you for $600 bucks!

Edit: oh and i shoved it in a fancy looking box and added fancy looking controls so you would think it is something new and good!

You do know that manufacturers actually make a loss (except for Nintendo) when you buy a console? The get the money back thorugh the games.
It's like ink jet printers. You get them dirt cheap, but the ink is really expensive. That's why they take extreme measures (microchips etc.) against refillers.

It is a logical argument as to why it could be possible the manufacturer makes a loss on the hardware.... but in reality, given the price of a console, compare that to the engineering investment in similar electronics..... conclusion is, pigs might fly!

I should mention that i am not totally against consoles, their mobility, ease of use is exceptional and they are able to withstand children to an extent that no laptop or PC can do.

Also they have advantages given to them because of the idiocy of PC game companies..... Mainly, more than one person can play with only 1 game copy (and screen)

Would you mind to explain where your outrage came from? As far as I can tell you would have *always* paid more for a PC equivalent of a console at its launch, also in case of the PS4 and Xbone.

Not 'outrage', Just an amusing thought - exactly as i mentioned in my first post.

You are aware that you would have to pay much more than the price of a Xbox One/PS4 for a equivalent PC, right?

So just to clarify .... lets say I'm an alien and my spaceship crashed. I need a computer to get it going again, the more powerful the computer, the better. I stole $600 dollars from the wallet of the person my spaceship landed on and the most computing power i can get for that money is not a PC, it is a console?

Exactly. Consoles are sold at a loss for a reason. You can't build a PC as powerful as a PS4 for U$400. That's the price of a good video card alone. Oh, and please point out where i can get 8GB GDDR5 memory for my PC (that's what the PS4 has, which is much faster than the current memory sticks we have for PCs).

Not only that, but raw power isn't even everything. Consoles are way more efficient than PCs at running games because, well, they're designed from scratch to run games, PCs are not.

Delusing myself? C'mon, try to find a PC with the same specs as a PS4 for U$399. A decent video card alone can easily cost U$400. And please tell me where i can find RAM as fast as the one on the PS4 (GDDR5) for my PC. I would really appreciate it.

who the hell cares...? whats the point in getting all elitist? "oooh pc better than console....my dads bigger than your dad"

you know what, i have a desktop, a laptop, a ps3, an xbox 360, kindle fire hd a galaxy s4 and will be getting a ps4 when i return home in july. i use all and love all, and thats it....bust. getting wound up/caught up in a pointless inflammatory argument, because you WANT to believe that "yours is bigger than mine" so to speak (thats a euphamism by the way, i dont literally mean mine and yours, before anyone wants to start) just for the sake of it because you want to "stay true" to whatever, is, for want of a better term, childish. you can have and enjoy them all you know.... just like you can be a fan of GOG AND steam... i know.....revolutionary huh? drm, no drm? pc? console? marmite? lalalallaalal whatever.

and to say the tech in a tablet is better than xbox one...... sad.

EDIT: no, i dont find this an "interesting way of defining a consle" but hey, thats opinion, so personal
